To use that rws bolt thru-'alike' skewer do you just need bolt thru end caps on your hub instead of standard qr? I'm not entirely sure how it works...
If it means a better hold and possibly less movement/flex then I'll happily buy new end caps for my mavic disc wheels. -
• #78
Yes, you need the correct end-caps, with DT Swiss hubs this is very simple once you've correctly identified the hub and the end cap, this sounds trivial but was the cause of much ID number studying on my part, and I still got the wrong end-caps first time round*.
The end-caps are specific to this 9mm QR-thru/whatever it's actually called - unsure if people other than DT Swiss do them.
- This may be because I am an idiot, however.

You'd need to step down the mavic through axle end caps to 9mm or something.
If you don't have dt hubs it might be simpler getting the normal QR rws skewer.

oh fuck if I had known that I wouldnt have bought the tune hubs. woops

Shimano quick release will be more than fine, they were solid on the touring bike.
-
• #82
Ah I see. I'll stick with the qr skewer I've got now. They do the job just fine.

• #83
cool thanks ed

You can still use the rws QR skewers - there's two versions, one that converts any 9mm to kind of bolt on and one that converts dt Swiss rws hubs to 9mm through axle.
You want the former if your hub has a 9mm QR axle fitment. If you have replacable end caps you can probably bodge it to work with the later.
Or yea - XTR skewer.

A friend at work got one of these last week. The paint whilst a little garish looks amazing in person with a bit of a two tone fade going on (green to yellow).
The praxis cranks are pretty nice as well. -

Spesh are seriously back on form in the design department
-
• #88
sorry for off topic but I used an old shimano skewer on my caaddisc yesterday - completely silent discs, no singing at all. bike is now completely silent too :-) so thanks @edscoble @Dammit @Pete4Eyes @Howard

Bingo.
Old Shimano skewer shit on everything apart from thru axles, glad it work for you.

Bin those naff weight weenie things! Haha.
I'm gonna upgrade the basic mavic ones I have for some of those ritchey ones I think. Although the mavic ones are probably not that bad. -
• #91
They are not close cam like Shimano.
-
• #92
Yeah that was my thinking. The mavic are basically beefy versions of the weight weenie ones. Will grab some showman or those ritchey ones at some point.

im just so surprised the performance of the shimano skewer is just so much better than the planet x ones? i had the planet x ones up so so so tight, clearly not good enough
-
• #94
I had the same ones. The bushing is a soft plastic. So I suspect the give was in this. It was up tight but could compress more and slide laterally when forced.
Also, not sure where I got ritchey from. Meant dt Swiss...

Ti axles are stretchy too.
-
• #96
Because the closed cam one allow extra leverage with less effort, wether option cam mean more effort just to clamp it slightly tighter.
It's fine if you have those rim brakes bike since the pads sit further away from the rims, whether with disc brakes, the pads are a lots closer to the rotors.

Praxis chainring work really well, a worthy alternative to Shimano's own with minimal flex when shifting to the big ring (whether chainring like FSA are notoriously flexy).
-
• #98
how does one notice chainring flex?
-
• #99
Why are we talking about Chainrings now?
-
• #100
Ah the spesh above! Right.
I've never had any shifting issues with my shimano cranks on either bike. Maybe I'm just dead good at setting up front mechs.
i also believe your image above is wrong, the RWS @Dammit linked seems to be the best. £29.99 a pop
true the hubs were cheap. maybe ill go for it when the wheels are built up. will have been paid again too
