• @MrDrem As far as im aware Alicia - Kurts wife, is battling shoulder injury and ive emailed Amanda to see where shes at but havent heard back yet. ill let you know as soon as i hear anything

  • Thanks for that.

Have you had a look over my two tracking sheets?
If there's anything extra that you'd like to see that you think would be helpful, let me know, and I'll try to add it for you.

  • I did indeed. Data overload for me today 😊 it looks brilliant. Such an amazing tool. Thank you for sharing it with me. Shame it's in miles lol - looks like I will finally need to learn about miles vs k m 😊

  • Hi Guys

Amanda has finally started her attempt and shes smashing it!
    400km on her 1st day, 370 on 2nd, 375 on 3rd...

  • Bump.

Just in case the time is right for some TCRno4 obsessives dot-watchers to migrate over. :)

I'd completely dropped the ball on this and didn't know who's currently still doing what. I just had a quick look:

Kajsa Tylen's still at it and currently near Lincoln:

    https://www.followmychallenge.com/live/ayearinthesaddle/

    http://www.ayearinthesaddle.com/

She's done an average of 139km per day and has so far racked up 31,275km. I expect that this is being updated dynamically on that web-site.

Are you still maintaining your spreadsheet(s), MrDrem?

Amanda Coker (as mentioned by Suzie above) and Alicia Searvogel are also active:

    http://ultracycling.com/sections/records/data/hamr/

Interestingly, both Coker and Searvogel appear to be being measured against the Godwin/Searvogel record on the Ultracycling site, and not the Billie Fleming record. Coker also seems to be recording higher speeds than all the others (but may not be riding for as many hours).

    Suzie herself is also active:

She has so far done 6,702km.

    Any others?

  • I think this update thread has the best graphs.

Amanda has been consistently doing 230 mile days so it's likely to get the overall record, not just the womens one. She'll catch Kajsa soon if she hasn't already, but I seem to remember that they are riding to different rules.

  • Ha, good to see that Jo's still/again at it. :)

Blimey, Amanda Coker is apparently aiming to pass K Searvogel's overall record. As Jo says, she's on pace to beat his record a full month before the year is out. 230-mile rides with a storm-shortened 165-miler counting as a 'short' ride.

  • Crumbs.

My ultra-feminist pal regularly tells me that women will soon be better than men at long distance swimming, running and cycling. Maybe she's right.

  • Just followed Amanda Coker on Strava. She appears to be riding a single loop over and over. I reckon I'd go completely mental after about a week of that. She must have some zen-level mental strength.

  • Wow... what is Amanda Coker's history? 230mile/day is an astounding distance!

  • I stopped updating things, as I sadly found Amanda Coker's strategy to be hugely depressing. Yes, she'll churn out a huge number of miles, and that's fine, but if you want to do it that way, go and find a velodrome to ride round.

  • Shame she's not trying to be more entertaining. :)

Hopefully, she will have to pick another loop sometime, maybe to get away from hurricane season, or just because she really does get bored.

  • It appears to be a 7 mile long nodderthon cycle path. I'd go spare riding round that for an afternoon, let alone a year.

  • Am I right in thinking she's partially using a recumbent too?

  • Yep.

  • It appears to be a 7 mile long nodderthon cycle path. I'd go spare riding round that for an afternoon, let alone a year.

Oh, that's very disappointing. I thought it would at least have been a longer loop, and I just imagined it might be a couple of dozen miles long. I suppose it must be within the rules, but the annual mileage record always conjures up those images of epic distances, as with Steve Abraham's spider web all across England and France, or tying PBP into the record etc.

I can well see how that's incredibly boring, and I think it would actually be in her interest to change that approach, as I think the record will just be considered less valid if and when she establishes it solely that way--much as others will undoubtedly follow in her wheel tracks and do it along similar loops.

  • Not to diminish kurt's amazing effort, but for me, the use of recumbents is a big disappointment. As with oliver's sentiment, it just doesn't fit with my mental image of the heroic rides made by Tommy G, or Steve A.

I know Steve ended up using a 'bent for some of his riding but being forced into using one with a broken foot feels different to setting out to use one for the aeros/comfort.

  • I don't have any problem with recumbents, I think they're great and I wish I had space to keep one and so learn to ride it. They are a little in a different category, though, as they confer multiple advantages on long-distance rides, and you probably need to set up different records for different basic bike technologies. Recumbents have been throwing curveballs at upright bikes since they were first invented, and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

Steve obviously wasn't riding a racing recumbent but a trike for rehabilitation. Trikes are much slower than two-wheeled recumbents.

  • Looks like Steve is planning another attempt at the Year Record..

  • Steve just got the UMCA month (30 day) record with 7104.5 miles (unofficial - awaiting validation); slightly topping Amanda's distance over the same period.

His plan was to review this data as a yes/no for another stab at the year record. Amanda is going to set the bar even higher...

(You have to specifically tell UMCA that you're going for the month record and give them a start date along with all of the 'proof'. You can't retrospectively claim it, even if your evidence is good. Several people have gone further in a month but Steve was aiming to just beat the existing record and leave him in a state that he could continue if he wanted, rather than destroying himself for a month.)

  • So, I just need to bust out a 370k audax every day for 31 days to beat him? Pass.

  • 381k for 30 days.

  • Why would I choose a month with 30 days? Have they defined "month" as 30 days?

  • Fuck it, London-Wales-London 400k x 30. Too easy...
