  • Probably a basic question but do I need to get QR mudguard mounts
    http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/axiom-mudguard-axle-runners/
    if I use chromoplastics?
    wiggle.co.uk/sks-chromoplastic-road-mudguard-set/
    cheers!

  • yes .. or P clips .. P clips are better (in time of puncture) as you dont have to mount it to wheel axle.

  • thanks @amey I'm setting up my SS for lanes over the winter, let me know if you fancy another ride out some time!

  • So Practical Cycles used My Herpes to send my VO hammered guards to me and, of course, they've squashed the package and squeezed the end of one of the guards together a bit.

I've emailed Practical Cycles to say that I did get a bit worried when they sent the tracking link and it was myherped and clearly /i was right to be worried, they've responded with a rather blunt "...all couriers mishandle goods."

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to bend the guard back but not sure whether that will have weakened it any, also not sure that returning them for an exchange would see me get a set in any better condition.

Quite temped to leave neutral/neg feedback on ebay due to their choice of courier but not sure that's either justified or allowed. Packaging could have been a bit better too actually, maybe I'll base my feedback on that.

  • It's shitty of them to reply with "all couriers..." I've always had companies send a replacement and they've gone on to deal with the couriers/claim compensation for the original item themselves...

  • They're cheap and they're ignorant of their duties under the law.

Parcelforce just delivered me a very nice pair of wheels from CtBM. Arrived in under 24 hours without even a scuff on the box.

  • You knew you were buying squashed goods?

    Didn't think so

    PP dispute.

The seller has delegated THEIR responsibility to deliver the goods in a fit condition to a third party, so it's THEIR problem.

Tell them to sort it out at their cost.

    You know this.

  • Tbh it opened up fine and the response did also say that if I was unable to bend it back (I'd said I planned to try but wanted to get in touch first incase they wanted the guards straight back) to get back in touch.

I think I'd rather retain the right to leave feedback (which I've seemed to lose in the past once a dispute gets closed off) though whether I go all the way to negative or settle for neutral is yet to be decided.

On the subject of the guards themselves though, holy fuck they are a pain to fit! Maybe I'm just used to fitting plastic guards but I also reckon squeezing the 45mm guards over 35mm tyres ain't helping anything as they seem to be very close on both width and diameter.

Biggest struggle is getting the 2 eye bolt things onto the stay and into the guard with the stay positioned evenly. I've only done the front one of those so far so any tips for the rear? I think I need to go back and tweak the front a bit as well.

I've had to run the stay down and under the disc brake at the front as attaching it to the mid blade eyelet was pulling the bottom of the guard in too much.

Should I drill the rear and fit the L bracket instead of using the crimp around one? Probably should eh?

  • With fenders it's always better to drill and bolt than crimp.
Unless you want a rhythm section.

  • Drill and bolt it will be then! Ta.

  • Cheers, supporting the fender while drilling can be tough, just find something that roughly approximates that shape, put it in a vise and lay the fender over it.

  • Drilling inside to out (through into some wood) made the most sense to me. Use a countersink to deburr the hole after.

  • You're right, it's been awhile...

  • Before I do anything daft and ruin them, is it possible to accurately bend the SkS metal poles without a vice?

  • Yeah but you need something to grip the pole both sides near the desired bend so it doesn't curve too much. Clamp at a workbench if you have one.
Also, a hammer and some hard steel surface if the result is not what you wanted

  • I've got by with pliers and strong wrists before. Maybe use some cloth/shim stock to avoid marring the surface.

  • The stays?

    Yeah, your hands?

  • cheers all, it's freaking on! hand and pliers did the job of sorting the stays.

  • Whats the best bet for 26" full length mudguards for an old mtb? Plastic is fine, will be running 2" semi slick tyres but would be nice if they cleared knobblies too just in case.
Chromoplastics or is there a better option for the same monies? Ideally with mudflaps.

  • Has anyone had first hand experience with the BBB slimguards?

    http://bbbcycling.com/accessories/fenders/BFD-22

    Coverage looks iffy.

  • M:Part Primoplastic? they come in 60mm which clear 2.0 tyres but it very much depend on the frame clearance.

  • These are fucking shite:
    http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FSSLEMG700/stronglight-e-type-700c-mudguard
Dunno what I expected for £8 but needed a stop gap in a hurry. I removed some metal dia-compes for these so I could temporarily run fat tyres (was going to go without but rain predicted for my ride).
The e-type mount is dreadful. Thin plastic that cracks. Aside from that they're like a cheap SKS copy. S-type mount is probably fine.
Gonna go with VO hammered if I stick with the wider tyres.

  • Anyone done those swarf cycles or latt developments carbon mudguards? Worth the money, easy to fit? Robust?
Thinking of getting some for new all weather commuter, like the idea of close fitting, lightweight, sexy looking mudguards but wondering whether the expense is worth it..
    Let me know..

  • What are those mudflaps that the one chap makes for SKS?
@dancing james you use them no? I was trying to remember to tell @Fox

  • Raw? Wider versions coming soon apparently, and more colours.
