Which Groupset?

  • The Chainset is growing on me, it's probably still the best looking one out of the current generation

  • Not sure how Shimano went from producing the best looking chainset by miles for DA9000 to producing one that looks like an ultegra crank mixed with those horrific campag ones.

  • Didn't we all say the same thing when 9000 was released?

  • What? That 7900 was the best looking crank on the market?! Lol.

Pretty sure everyone got moist over the 9000 cranks straight away.

  • when does di2 become old enough to be purchased cheaply 2nd hand?

  • 10spd di2 is stupidly cheap 2nd hand. Still lovely stuff.

  • you are a designer you should know better

Just realised you are UX now ..

  • Those are 2012 Sram cranks.

These are the latest ones, also the best ones.

  • I bought my first Di2 group (10sp) for under £300, cost about the same again to upgrade everything to internal battery and 11sp

  • Not bad.

Now, if they could just get their products to last longer than the unboxing video...

  • Where does the SRAM being unreliable notion come from? My old 10 spd rival stuff is still going strong and shifting fine after 6 years and the cheapo apex group i have is solid too.

  • Bro, do u even Groupset thread?

  • Actually, no. I misread the title...

  • They've not gone for low weight then.

  • new red cranks are hott. 9000 cranks also hott

    new DA cranks unseemly

  • I'm looking to upgrade my partner's Sora 9spd groupset to Tiagra 4700.

Believe I can keep the current FSA chainset so just need cassette, front/rear derailleurs, chain, and shifters.

Anyone know anywhere selling "part groupsets" - buying a full groupset gives me stuff I don't need, but buying individual components seems to fairly expensive.

Tiagra 4700 generally seems hard to get hold of, unless you get a bike with it on already.

  • Yes you can, no reason why not.

The other budget option is putting a 105 5700 shifters instead, and change only the chain and cassette as Sora have the same cable pull as the old 10 speed Shimano road derailleur (as well as the 8 speed version), having said that, the Tiagra 4700 shifters outperform the 105 5700 in every way possible, and a lots more suitable for smaller hand.

Be wary, FSA chainring isn't exactly stiff, while it'll work fine, it won't work as well as a Shimano chainset due to the stiffer chainring on the 4700, 5800, 6800/etc.

  • Cheers - yeah, I have 105 5700 - new Tiagra seems nicer, especially on the front shifts, so will go with that.

Just need to find it at an acceptable budget now!

  • Well, start with the chain and cassette, the cheapest one you can find will work perfectly well.

I usually recommend checking German website like Rose, but unfortunately due to Brexit, the pound's too weak.

  • up until very recently you could get a 2016 silver veloce groupset for 300 pounds. Ribble no longer has stock, anyone know anywhere that still has it?? cheers

  • Sora looking very impressive for 2017.

  • Sora looking very impressive for 2017.

Still 9 speed? Is it so much more expensive to make a 10/11 speed groupset, even for Shimano at this point?
