Yeah, I'm south. Fortunately, someone local has volunteered!

Just sussed out what went pop in my Quad amp last year. £40 or so should see it fixed
-
• #3204
what was it?
-

2 big capacitators in the power amp on their way out and a condensator in the pre-amp that has gone pop.
Hopefully that's it, cheap and easy enough to do myself with some help from my engineer brother in law

Made this isolation box over the last couple of weeks - had made no obvious audible difference, but it was fun to make. It's some sort of 2" x 3/4" hardwood (leftover in the garage) with 4 x sorbothane feet, 0.2mm black glass beads/sand and a 25mm granite slab.
Pretty pleased with it as long as I don't look too closely at the joints...
Am thinking about getting an acrylic base cut with levelling feet, but looking online it'll cost about a third of the turntable so that might have to wait a while.

Having a clearout and I have an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge & stylus (150-ish hours) and a 2M Blue stylus (20 hours) for sale.
Was thinking £45 for the Red and £80 for the Blue if anyone's interested?

• #3208
Both good cartridges. Might be tempted by the Blue.

Forgot to mention, the Blue is in the original packaging, the red is not. (The Blue is stylus only, the Red is cartridge and stylus.)

Interest in the Red. Can't remember how well it's supposed to match up with the Linn Axis/Basik Plus combo, will read up

Ah right - didn't clock that detail. As I don't have an ortofon M body, that wouldn't really work for me.
Thanks for pointing that out.
GLWS - I've only ever heard good things about the M series.

Found my IE800s in suit trouser pocket. Lost for 7 months while going through fat phase. Microphonics still terrible.

just curious, what's your take on speaker cable?

Use a piece of wire. Van damme if you want a fairly practical wire:

Yep.
I was obliquely referring to the price of the ear buds above. -

I've moved from the 60s to the 70s replacing my lenco l75 with a Rega planar 3 with original sme arm. Really different sounds but first foray into mc carts (high output dynavector) is a revelation, which is unfortunate, as theyre so expensive and you can't replace the stylus.

I've moved fairly quickly up to a 2M Bronze and I can't fault it.
If it's any help, the 2M Blue and Red share the same body, just the stylus is different. You can mix and match them as long as you don't mind the logo being a different colour.

Replinth the lenco and use the new arm to replace the lenco one. It will destroy the planar3

Denon's DL110 is another cracker of a high OP MC cartridge. I used one in a Technics SL1210, superb match. Runs happily into MM phono stage too, no sut required.

Sorta agreee! Heavy plinthed L75's and G99's can be ace but IME they do need a proper motor overhaul and good condition idler wheel to get them de-rumbled. Been there, twice! IIRC the Lenco arm has an odd spindle to pivot distance, not all arms work properly in that TT. I ended using a Decca Unipivot on one project. Ace tweaker project though for when the weather is too manky for wheelie fun.
-
• #3221
Yeah, you do need to move the arm mounting point to the correct distance / height.
-
• #3222
Yeah I've seen the replinth stuff for the lencos but I totally cannot be arsed. I struggled to even find a replacement idler wheel. It had an 80s systemdek arm which was ok, but the whole thing was fairly noisy. The speed control and wooden veneer was amazing though.

Any suggestions for a small amp, digital in, which would be connected to my computer and two smallish speakers...
Don't want anything too expensive £200 would be top whack ...
Oh no AV amps either..
I thank you
I could do it for you, though I live over in Leytonstone and work in Shepherds Bush. I seem to recall you were based in South London.
