  • what on earth is that saddle?

  • Hey @bertocq, glad you finally got it finished! How are you finding the 140mm rear rotor? And how are the chainrings?

I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread to pop a pic of my (almost) finished bike on here. :)

  • No problem! Looks great with the fenders, I need to get some installed!! Today I finally tested her in hard conditions with snow and rain, really happy with the braking, using SwissStop 15S pads by the way, although I didn't got close to my descending limits because of the wet road, but rear was ok anyway.

Next week I'll have the white Procraft stem and the white Superstar Seatpost

  • Nice! It's crazy how different our builds have turned out. I really like the look with mudguards on there, proper utilitarian and keeps my bum and feet nice and dry.

That ride of yours on Strava looks epic, I need to find the time/willing to do something like that - although there's no mountains that big around here...

Looking forward to seeing it with the extra white stuff, no white bartape though?!

  • Yes I missed the mudguards a lot going down :D. The mountains here aren't as great as in Asturias, but they are still nice in winter. Next weekend I'll do a 194km and 3400m+ with 4 climbs/descents hoping to get more feedback about the 140mm rear in dry pavement.

I want to keep it functional, so no white stuff that can get dirty easily :D. I've already a Black Lizard Skins DSP 3.2mm Bar Tape waiting to be wrapped when I finally sort out the handlebar and stem.

  • Got any pics of how you wired up your dynamo @bertocq ?

  • Sorry for the reply delay @hippy I've been riding a 1000 brevet https://www.strava.com/activities/635767414

I followed this guide, pretty simple https://theflyingarrow.wordpress.com/2014/06/05/getting-wired-sinewave-cycles-reactor-installation/ Forget that they are using another set of lights and usb charger, cables are cables.

Just peel both supernova and d1 cable ends, twist one of each together, then insert the two resulting cables back into the SP Dynamo connector

I didn't have the time/patience to seal the ends correctly... just abused some electrical tape and good to go (it doesn't rain in summer around here)

Supernova and D1 can work together , but light will have less power if D1 is draining watts. My improvement will be to add some kind of electrical switch to the D1 cable so I can cut it from draining power with a click, instead of fiddling with the unit to disconnect/connect the USB cable while climbing

I'm really sad that you can't finish your 4S Disc build :(, haven't had much time to read the forum, but as far as I know it was a problem with the rear wheel ? Not finding a suitable option with 32holes, centerlock and wide enough for 28mm tires? You have @CarlosBI now living in the UK, maybe he can help you with wheels (its his thing)

  • 4S Disc was finished(ish) on Thursday, ridden to work on Friday and I rode 700k over the weekend on it. It doesn't have the rear wheel I'd planned (this will be built later) but almost everything else works, including front and rear Supernova dyno lights and D1 usb charger. Framebag needs work (it's not mine though so I can't modify it, might have to buy my own), top tube bag needs to be more secure, headset loosened off a bit, front disc makes annoying noise like the return spring is rattling.

  • Spring should have enough tension so it doesn't move around, neither the brake pads... maybe open it a bit so it has even more tension? Hydro disc brake calipers can be complicated to set up, maybe a mountainbike expert should have more experience to help you than a road mechanic?

  • I need to look at it myself so I know how to change pads on it. I'll get a new set of pads and work out how to change them. In the process I'll have a look at the spring. Maybe it's loose or something.

  • Don't have any experience with the shimano brake pads, but as everyone says... TRP brake pads are shit and investing in some Swisstop ones is really a great upgrade

  • My ride home felt a bit funny, like I had a flat tyre or something. Gave the bike a quick once over when I got home:

Not great to find on a 6 month old frame...

  • Duct tape.
On a serious note I'm sorry for your loss, that looks pretty fuq'd. Repairing or changing the frameset?

  • Hopefully replacing it, I only bought it about 6 months ago... I've messaged probikekit and will see what they have to say. There's been no misuse as far as I'm concerned so I really hope they'll replace it under warranty.

Back on the fixed gear for the foreseeable future I guess... :/

  • FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU 😮

Seeing that hurt me like if it was mine's :( Hope Kinesis and Probikekit helps you quickly

Just revised mine and it doesn't have any suspicious cracks, but I'll start to check it more often.

  • :) hopefully it's just a one off, rather than a batch issue or design flaw (like the 160mm rear discs!) .

Anyway, it could've been worse - could've happened on the Dunwich Dynamo a couple of weeks back, or somewhere else miles from home, rather than somewhere along a 7 mile commute...

    I'll keep you posted :)

  • These both look like really nice builds, sorry to see that frame crack Turtle.

I've just taken delivery of a 4s disc after a nasty hit and run mangled my canyon. Quick question, did you guys install the crown race on your builds? I emailed kinesis and they told me the fork has an integrated crown race... Confused now!

  • Yes, I installed the crown race on my fork, dunno if something's changed... And thanks for your condolences. Latest update is I've been asked to email probikekit's warranty guys with more pics of the crack and info about how much I've used the frame and whether the crack was there when I received the frame...

  • Hope you have some luck with that. Think some more emails to kinesis are in order. I know that quite a few tapered carbon steerers don't require a crown race hence my query. Did you use a specific tool to install it?

Anyway, just got shipping notice from Hunt about the 4season disc wheels I ordered. Bar some new contis they're the last bit I'm waiting for. Build starts soon, assuming the toddler gives me a moment!

  • So after calling PBK every day since initiating the warranty request/return, they've just sent me an email instructing me to package and post the frame back to them so they can have a look at it.

Apparently they'll then spend an unknown amount of time deciding whether it's a successful warranty claim and I'll have to wait a further 30 days after they've decided on it before I'll get a new frame and get reimbursed for postage.

This feels a bit ridiculous. Should I expect/ask them to pay for stripping and rebuilding my 6 month old broken frame?

  • PBK? Ouch- This might take a while...

  • Oh shit. Are they bad?

  • You should ask but they'll be under no obligation to. Hopefully they or Kinesis will offer some sort of goodwill gesture if they accept responsibility. Perhaps a deal with a local Kinesis supplying shop?

  • Used a 1.5'' adapter for setting the crown race straight, without hammering with screwdrivers or other dubious methods. Fork came with it, so I assume its needed.

Hope Kinesis are still kind enough to resolve that problem @TurtleRecall !
