  • The toe overlap isnt too bad on the v1, its a medium, im purely building this up for a bit of fun, mainly for commuting and weekend riding on gravel and canal paths, may hit up epping forest, i doubt ill be the competing on it, may give incredible cross a go when the cx season hits but nothing to serious

  • So contis are rad! They run smooth to keep pace for commuting and they handled well over the Olympic park mountain bike track tonight even though I was fixed. Golden gear for now I'll be 49:18 and once I get the cx crank for winter 42:18, playing with chain lengths so we can weld the canti brackets in the right place but pretty happy with the gear and wheel setup now, convinced I'm moving in the right direction

  • goodies arrived

  • DSP Lizard skin tape
    Conti tubes
    Shimano brake cable set
    Sturmey Archer 18T freewheel

  • What's the free wheel like? Trying to find one that doesn't make a noise when freewheeling but struggling big time.

  • Seems pretty quiet, heard good things for the money, will update once it's on the bike

  • Having been inspired by this, I'm tempted to put some fatter tyres on my old frame for a comfier commute/fun - you miss the thinner ones? Would hate to get them and just feel like a tractor all the time

  • Ah good thanks. Interested to hear. Liking how this project is turning out

  • What did you figure out with the canti mounts then? And are you going internal cabling? That konga built BMW is a beaut. Really interested as mine may go that way in a few years time ;). Cheers. T

  • The reason i put 25c tyres on was Coz I was sick of going slow on the 35c's I was running for the long commute. The bike doesn't have a good enough purpose now really besides commuting, I hardly use it at the weekend so I felt the need to turn it into a sscx bike to get more use out of it Coz I don't want to sell it and it rides nicer with bigger tyres but needed a freewheel for the offroading hence the sscx conversion

  • So got hold of steel removable mounts for rob quirk to braze on, going for brass brazing, should be simple and fairly neat. Mount will remove up to the boss so I'll have some boss on the frame but should look clean.

Going for internal cable routing on underside of the top tube which I'll seal later on in the year again with quirks helps to prevent too much water getting in (for now it will just be 2 small holes rather than a sealed channel in the top tube)

Wheels are setup now with tyres, tubes and freewheel and drops are on! Looking odd but awesome. Goes in to quirk tmr for the work do fingers crossed should have it back Monday ready to wrap the bars and take it for a spin

  • Tried the freewheel out last night round the block brakeless Coz I'm waiting for them in the post. Drops are on, it's weird but I think it's gonna work ok

  • How did it sound?

  • Sounds awesome mate, really looking forward to the end result. Were the mounts by PMW? Seen they do some nice ones. Also, were they pre mitred or is Quirk doing that for you? Sorry for all the questions, just very interested in all of this.
The drops look good, they do take a bit of adjusting to though especially when used to risers ;) T

  • Are they the S500's?

Feedback on them would be appreciated when all up and running

  • Levers are on, they feel super comfy @user65150 but obviously can't tell properly Untill the v brakes are on. Feels really odd atm Coz I was using it with risers for so long but the geometry is almost identical to my road bike, took a while this evening adjusting lever and saddle position but I'm convinced it's gonna ride super nice

  • The ceramic rims matches the frame so well, its almost a pitty they will turn silver. I have to say I'm a bit worried about internal cabling ie. drilling holes in the frame and allowing water to enter too. I would consider full outer cable or two cable stops on the top tube, but i know it's not my bike.
Great project though and I'm looking forward to the final build!
