  • Wiggle Cosine? Or if you want to build them yourself Dt Swiss R450DB / Stans Crest laced to Novatec Superlight

  • If you want durable, easily maintainable hubs then I'd avoid Novatec. They are a bitch to service and the bearing sizes are unusual, so hard to source replacements, and, if my experience is representative, they aren't very durable.

  • I'm leaning towards some cheap carbon clinchers from China tbh, I could probably get some ~50mm 25mm wide wheels on Novatec hubs for around £300... Might not be better than some Stans Grails to Hopes, but will look rad ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@andyp I've had pretty good experiences with Novatec stuff, it probably depends on what hubs you get, how they're fitted together and a sprinkling of luck.

  • My reasons for not getting Chinese carbon are diminishing now I've got a bike with discs. No dodgy braking, no wearing the rim down every time I brake.

Only thing holding me back is I'd be sticking them on my 4S disc commuter with SKS Longboards. Would I be aero neutral with 50mm crabon?

  • I'd imagine that the mudguards would more than negate any aero benefits. Also, deep rims & mudguards is an awful look.

  • Yeah, that's basically my thinking too - since the hubs are usually Novatec, and therefore decent enough, the downsides are quickly diminishing. If you're worried about aerodynamics and mudguards, just start talking about mud clearance instead ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@Dammit, how much time did you spend in the wind tunnel with the Time Machine?

@pleaderwilliams yup, more often than not they look rubbish, but nothing looks as rubbish as being soaked in mud and road grit feels. I want one wheelset for cross and road, and if I can get deep carbon for that, why not eh?

  • Finally picked up my wheels.

PMP rims on Tune hubs 24/24. DT Comps with brass nipples. ~1330g including tape, according to my kitchen scales.

Controversially an old school narrow rim (18mm external) because I can't fit anything properly wide between my stays anyway so decided not to worry about you lot and your wide rim trend and go all out for weight savings instead.

I'll report back once I've ridden some climbs this weekend.

  • all out for weight savings instead

    DT Comps with brass nipples

Couldve saved 100+ grams with cx rays and alu nipples. Why didnt you?

  • And the fact that the bladed spokes would make you much faster than lighter wheels ever would.

  • reynolds assault slg disc version

  • anyone got any experience using the Stans Alpha 400?

Bought some but read the warning on always riding about not running them with clinchers, and if you have to not running higher than 90psi.

I'm about to take these away for a week to the alps, am I going to die..?

  • I ran Alpha 340s for a couple of years as clincher with 100+psi no worries. They make a bit of a pop as the tire seats itself on the rim but other than that not an issue.

  • Thanks - just had an image of the tyre ejecting itself as I come flying down a mountain

  • You may want to read this as it seems certain tyres where more problematic then other tyres for coming off the rim ..

On a positive note I've had zero issues when used road tubeless.

  • @MechaMorgan Surly Ultra New disc hubs - quality, durable, serviceable and a good company to buy shit from http://surlybikes.com/parts/wheels/hubs and then yeah some chinese carbons would be good fun

  • Live in HK, where there are issues with alu nipples seizing.

Wasn't offered CX Rays so might be an upgrade once the rims are worn.

  • I always had Gatorskins for reference, wheels were on the commuter.

Rims were surprisingly durable too for the weight, never had an issue and I built them myself.

  • Anyone have experience with dt swiss r 522 wheels/rim?
It looks like it's oem only, found almost nothing on Google

  • Doing some research on a wheelbuild for the 2017 TCR. Need 32 spokes front and back. Dynamo hub on front. Tubeless.

    What recommendations have you got?

  • I'm after a set of wheels for my genesis day one daily commuter, 32h clincher non disc. I run it fixed, rear spacing is 135mm so I'm looking at the surly ultra hubs. For rims I'm looking at pacenti sl23, I currently run 28c but may go bigger so I'm after a wider rim. How does this sound? Ideally I'd get them built locally but I don't really know of anyone (I'm not in London). DCR seems to know his stuff and has a few recommendations on here. I'm also looking at Just Riding Along, how are they? If I wanted to go a bit cheaper what would be a good swap for the pacenti? I was initially looking at A119s.

  • Hey, I'm looking to get some light-ish wheels with a wide rim to ride up and down hills in the north, some are even lovely and cobbled (like this one -http://www.strava.com/segments/1427959)

I've spied these - http://www.huntbikewheels.com/collections/road-rim-brake-wheels/products/hunt-race-season-aero-wide-road-wheelset-1480g-31deep-24wide and I've also thought about getting some Archetypes laced to Ultegra hubs.

I'm not interested in carbon rims as I already have a pair, and they ear piercingly loud on the descents last time.

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

  • The Field is almost complete and I'm having a bit of a wobble on wheels.

I was always going to go mega-bling and go Chris King R45 disc to ENVE 3.4 SES (slight discount possible via Field but still coming out around £2,100).

However, having thought about it, I'm really not sure I can justify it and, in all honesty, whether there will be a justifiable appreciable difference between those, and much cheaper wheels (I have gone from good wheels to very good wheels before when I went R45 before and noticed a difference of sorts).

I'm having a think about the Hunt clincher disc wheels which come in around the same weight as the ENVE set BUT I know nothing about Hunt except the reviews I read online.

Does anyone have first-hand experience of these wheels? Also, I'm aware they're put together in Taiwan like a lot of other wheels so the romance of it being a British company is a non-point!

    @amey et al?

  • I brought these for my brother's madone, lovely set. Light and very wide for value for money IMO

  • How about building a set yourself?

I'm going to rebuild my commuter with deep crabon from light-bicycle rims later next month. If you get some CK hubs and lace them to that?
