About to pull the trigger on a pair of DT Swiss R24s. Any alternatives I should consider in the same price range (£150-200)? They're replacing some Superstar Arc22s, which have been fine, but a bit flexible for my liking.

I went 3.4 / King disc and as great as they are I probably couldn't say they're over a grand better than something else. Hard to really quantify those kind of things I guess. They'll both do the job equally well.

Really appreciate your input.
I know very few who ride the CK / ENVE disc and they've all said they're very good to ride...if you have the money!

I need some help....I've never done a wheel upgrade and stuck with the stock wheels that have come with my bikes (Aksium, Ksyrium, Vision 25s etc.) but now I'd like to use the cyclescheme £1k budget on a decent aero/carbon wheelset and component upgrades.
I've seen this on Ribble http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/campagnolo-pr-whls-bullet-80/ for £500 -is this a good buy? does anyone here have one and can recommend it? any better alternatives around this price point?
Thanks in advance

Looks a good price but quite weighty, depends how much you value aero over weight and what riding you'll be doing. You'll be blown all over with 80mms I would imagine, although I've never tried anything that deep.
-
• #6633
good point... at 1.8kg its pretty much the same weight as the Vision 25s and I much prefer weight over aero

• #6634
I don't think they're a particularly good aero shape either, compared to the modern blunt / round types so I probably wouldn't bother. Looks like 1935g for the pair too so yeah, pretty weighty.

Ta muchly. I'm going to have to do some more (re)searching

Hey Dom! Hope you're well!
From what I can tell the hunt wheels use rebranded novatec hubs. Which, in my experience*, were ok at best. Had to change the bearings in the rear after one winter. But others have had better experience. Let's call the quality 'variable'.*experience with the 'sl' road hubs. The disc hubs are likely not much different.

I believe the only difference is, Hunt use pretty good quality Japanese bearings instead (albeit the rest may well be Novatec!).
-
• #6638
Yeah, novatec online advertise as using high quality Japanese bearings as well. I'd steer clear. Definitely can get some better hubs at a similar weight for similar money. The low end dt Swiss, is it the 240 or 350? or even the pro4 from hope (a little heavier but will never need throwing away). Laced to some deep carbon of your choice and you'll save a good bit of ££. But... If you got the money... Bling CK...

Also, I think the problem was the cheap seals on the novatec hubs. There was a rubber o-ring between the outside world and the sealed bearing. I had to pack it with grease to stop shit getting through to the bearing and then replace said grease every now and again.

Good shout with the Hopes, not sure if they do a road disc hub yet though surprisingly.

The pro4 is road orientated I think? Standard spacing, QR or thru axle and bomb proof. Think they only come in 6 bolt. Plenty of colours but you only need black. That'd be what I'd go for if I had the money. Paired with quality spokes and an awesome rim they'd last a lifetime.
Edit: available in 135mm spacing. http://www.hopetech.com/product/pro-4-rear-hub/

Ahhhh right, yeah that should work, I didn't look in the MTB section. Always had Hopes on the MTB, can't fault them.

Another vote for DCR Wheels, great service and patience from David. And the wheels are nice too (got some road crabons).

Ah nice. I've never had a pair myself but in doing my research they seem the best option on a lower budget. Circa £200 for the hubset which is fantastic when you'd have to spend another £500 to get better.
The dream at the moment is a pair of these for myself but the dream keeps changing...
@xDOMx hope pro 4 and if not, Chris King.
Saying that, how much are the equally blingy tune King and Kong hubset?Edit: circa £450. Could be a good middle ground but if you're willing to spend an extra £200 what's another £200...

Royce hubs could be a good option for a UK built bike, think you're looking at around £500 a set though.

• #6646
tune, extralite?

• #6647
Hope Pro 4 are a bit nice...
-
• #6648
Aye, they look great which is obviously the most important thing but they are also (from what I've read) amazing hubs that you can just forget about.

...a pair of DT Swiss R24s. ... They're replacing some Superstar Arc22s, which have been fine, but a bit flexible for my liking.
You could also get the Superstar Arc22s rebuilt with thicker spokes.
Change them from the 1.5mm butted spokes (sapim lasers) to 1.8mm (sapim race or DT swiss competion) and it should be a good wheelset. -

Don't think it does much TBH, the rims isn't exactly stiff to begin with.
Still a good wheelset tho.
It's what I did before (light bicycle laced to Chris King using good spokes; marvelous wheels).
I think it'd work out more expensive mind (than Hunt).
