Impressive. Odd how the simple act of carving a date on a wall carries so much resonance.

Bit like the locks on bridges thing....after a while becomes a hive mentality thing...

I wanted to do justice to the theme this week, so I decided to place something quotidian in a quasi-urban environment; art-wank aside, it's an idea I've been working on for a few days. So, I filled balloons with water which I froze, then shot the resultant orbs in a basement garage. My aim was to show how a "space for art" or "a museum" can be created in an environment which is typically accessible to all but where the subject matter is transient. Each ball lasted about 45 mins in a rare spring-time heat. I'll post up some of the out-takes - which some of you may think would have been better for this submission - in the Digital Photography thread if you're interested.

There's a period shift in gravestone design, which is quite dateable, and well known in Archaeology. I thought it was covered in Renfrew and Bahn, but I can't find it in a brief flick of my 2nd Ed. It's certainly covered in Tarlow though.
Simplified, it goes skull and crossed bones > winged deaths head (with or without bones) > Cherub (with or without bones)
This would be one of the earlier ones, and it's date is about what I would expect.
http://www.histarch.illinois.edu/plymouth/deathshead.html and
http://www.yale.edu/ynhti/curriculum/units/2003/2/03.02.01.x.html#g have a bit about the american context of them. -

good entries this week. I was too lazy to get a shot sorted.

Where are those dolls? I recognise them from an album cover....

Looks like the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities in Hackney.
There's live snakes and tarantulas roaming about in there, too. -
• #1141
Indeed. Although no snakes or spiders that I saw.

Sounds worth a (wary) visit!

I did a shoot with the guy who runs it in the basement (where the museum bit is) while they had electricians round. The lights kept going off, leaving us in utter darkness and he drops the "I haven't seen the spider in while" line.

And I noticed @skydancer has got a PB of 2, too!
Please someone vote for @f1s and this can be re-named the Week Of Dreams :)

I am concerned it may have been a sympathy vote.
I'm high maintenance...

A vote and being able fully able to wipe your arse.
A day of revelations?

I voted for you chief; a good image, no sympathy vote at all. The arse-wiping you'll have to deal with alone alas.
@stranger that's nice. gave me a flashback! Sorry to clog thread but reminds me of this wall in Zemun Serbia that I shot in 2013 - hundreds, maybe thousands of bricks, all scratched up. It was fascinating.
