  • This is definitely not an audiophile question, but one about audio. Need a small all-in-one system for the kitchen. Weighing up the benefits of a 'smart' system e.g. Marantz MCR vs a 'dumb' one e.g. Denon DN40 + Chromecast Audio (or similar). Thoughts?

  • I've found with nearly all of the smart systems that I've played with that the interface isn't great unless you're using a mobile/tablet as a controller, in which case you may as well be using a chromecast audio or bluetooth or whatever.

  • As I said upthread I went for an MCR610, mostly because it had good connections and sounded good, but the internet radio is easy to use with the standard remote and worth having, as is the built in Airplay, which means I can have the same music simultaneously from the speakers in our living room, cellar, bathroom and kitchen, or different combinations - PARTY.

I have also plugged a Chromecast Audio into it because we have Android phones, a Chromebook etc. and I don't want to be tied down to Apple.

  • no - i meant that i would see if there is a noise using the tt through the phono...

    feline/avian friends, fear not!

  • cheers bluds

  • The cat has suddenly become obsessed with the record player whilst it's spinning.

    Grr.

  • Oh, trixy, it might be a dog if its going Grr.

    Glad to be of help!

  • This is what I'm thinking. Bought a roku box for the TV over Chromecast on the advice that it had moar channels and a remote, but the interface is clunky so I usually use the app. And mostly just watch netflix.

@Fox, thanks for your input. You can do multi-room with chromecast too, now, apparently, though not tried.

Probably need to demo some gear, but seen a killer deal on the Denon with some Q Acoustics 3020s for less than the marantz alone...

  • Can I please take them if still available?! In Brockley, could collect over the weekend. We have an old Cambridge CD player whose display has gone which is quite frustrating.

  • Yeah absolutely. I'm around tomorrow afternoon, about 1pm - 5pm otherwise next week. Drop me a message if that's good.

  • Subwoofer home cinema. Talk to me
What to look for, good bad.
    Price range of £200

  • Omgz. Had a moment listening to floating points on the pioneer I got off here.

  • I have a Cambridge audio a1 for sell. What's a good price on here? And elsewhere?

  • Am looking at upgrading my system, as currently all I have is a laptop and a couple of budget/ reasonably OK sounding speakers. Looking at mini systems in the Denon range (and others). Budget up to around £500. Ideally would like CD and wireless and possibly DAB. I have no knowledge of what speakers would work with a mini system. Any recommendations on what gives best value (would consider 2nd hand)?

  • My general advice (as a broadcast engineer) is mainly budget for decent speakers as they make such a massive difference. Any decent brand of mini system amp/CD/radio combo you buy will likely have much lower distortion figures than that if the speakers you end up buying. Sometimes you can get bargains on speakers on eBay, but I've not been looking recently.

  • get Focal active (powered) monitors, they'll make a huge difference. @Chalfie mentioned a model up thread that are good - from ebay, obvs

  • Active speakers is a good suggestion. These might be worth considering:

  • Does anyone have recommendations for speakers at the lower end of the market (£60-£100). They'll be going in a room approximately 4.5x4m and used for music (spotify and a low end turntable) and films.

    The amp I have is a Yamaha AX-396 (http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/yamaha/ax-396.shtml).

Not in a huge rush for them so happy to wait for an ebay bargain. Am I right in thinking I should go second hand?

Sorry if this has been asked before (I'm sure it has), I had a search but couldn't find much in the way of recommendations for second hand/older speakers.

  • I have some Rogers ls4a you can have for collection from Greenwich. There is a minor fault I think in one of them but they can get you going anyway.

  • That would be great, thanks a lot for the offer. I'm in New Cross and could collect next weekend if you're around (or any other weekend).

  • Good shout. I had some Diamond 8s, then 9.1s - both really great speakers for not much money. For under £100 also look at the older Q Acoustics 2020i, which are also compact if space is a limiting factor.

  • Can someone help me understand the following problem:
Plug telly into amp via RCA cables. AMP has "buzzy" feel to it. i.e. when you touch it, it feels like it's on. What's not grounded? The telly?

The amp isn't buzzy when telly isn't plugged in. Or when turntable is plugged in and playing.
