RideWithGPS premium allows you to make routes with the alerts at different distances from turns. I find the Edge 1000 just forgets about a lot of, how do I put this, FUCKING OBVIOUS TURNS! and if I wasn't constantly eyeballing the stupid device I'd be even more lost...

The edge 800 I have works fine.
The Dakota I had worked fine until a firmware update ballsed it up and the only way to upload was manually.
The two forerunners via Ant+ have always been patchy and my forerunner 410 currently won't sync at all.

Anyone on here used an Etrex 30x?
It has an Off Course distance field and Turn Warning beeps. Is there any way to make it beep when you go off course?
EDIT:
If following a route, but this isn't the same as a track so no go, right?
"Not sure about your first question, for your second provided you're following a route you can (on all Garmin handhelds I've used) set an off course alarm, but it's in the Marine setup so you need to look there. "

Anyone know if getting a class 10 sd card (vs the existing class 4) will make my garmin 800 boot up and load routes etc any faster?
-
• #3106
Probably not as it boots from its own internal memory. Archive actvities if you save them to the micro sd, I put them in separate folders per year. Only have maps enabled that you are going to use if you have several mapsets on the card.
-
• #3107
Yes, but only if the class 10 card is in an Edge 1000 that you replace your 800 with. ;)

Swaps?

• #3109
Sure, I'll have your Class 10 card. I have a Class 4 here in pristine condition..

I realise it's flogging a broken record, but holy shit Garmin's maps are fucking useless. Routing me into a dead-end industrial estate, and down multiple dirt paths when "Stay on roads" has been selected.
Remind me exactly what I paid £30 for -

I've reported some of their navigation errors before - it might help fix the issues - they do update the maps.

In what way?
-
• #3115
My speed sensor was reading between 50kph and 230kph while I'm the turbo last night. I'm not a scientist but I think it's a few kph off. It's the first time I've used it and it's one of the older GSC-10 with a magnet.
Magnet too close? Too far away? It was pretty consistent and relative, just shifted up a few octaves.

I regularly bust out 200kph+ rides on my turbo.. sounds fine.

To all you brave Garmin ad-hoc explorers that now and then need a stress free ride: It is possible to plan a route from your desktop, load it on Garmin and ride the damn thing.
Using OSM cycle map on your desktop will reveal what kind of road you are planning to ride on.
Ridewithgps.com is a brilliant site for this kind of thing.

That's all well and good until you
1) didn't sit down the night before to plan your ride
2) took a detour off your planned route for whatever reason
3) your Garmin deleted or in some other way fucked your GPX file upload -

It's pretty crazy that you end up at X village and the Garmin, set to shortest distance routing, DOUBLES the actual distance back home.
I think it was 110k back from Champs Night and the Garmin route back (that I luckily ignored) was 200k+
That's pretty shithouse 'least distance' routing in anyone's book.

Fiddled a bit. Got cadence working and adjusted the wheel size in my 500, which may have had an extra digit somehow.

Ah fuck... new computer just upgraded my reliable 800 to 2.70. The fucking world is going to end. This is the only device from Garmin that has managed to work properly more than 50% of rides and Garmin's shitty Express software just pushed an update to it without even asking me. Fucking shittest shit I've ever shitting seen! Better not fuck my device you Garmin pricks.
-
• #3123
Le whoops
Wait, is this the first documented error on a Garmin that wasn't caused by Garmin's shitty software?
-
• #3124
Relax. Mines on this version and has worked for 100% of my rides for the last few years
-

You can always roll it back, although you will have a constant enervating battle with Garmin Express which will try to upgrade you every time you plug in.
Anyone else got an Edge 1000?
I plugged in to my PC to upload a route last week, and I inadvertently had the unit updated.
Before the update I got a clear indication about 30 seconds before any turn. About 5 seconds before the turn, I got an indication that was even more clear about the turn. Great!
Since the update, I seem to get an indication of the turn about 30 seconds before which is completely inaudible in any sort of wind. Then I get a realy clear indication about 5 seconds beforehand, but it's often too late, and if something else is going on in the road, I have to prioritise the road situation.
Long story short, I missed a lot of turns on Saturday. That was very annoying for me, and I'd like to blame Garmin.
Seriously, though, isn't there a way to choose your own notification "bleeps" when navigating?
