  • Oh, what size is the torx bolt @mdcc_tester ? I have only one torx key, a T25 but it appears to be too small, do i need T30?

  • do i need T30?

    Yes

  • Ta

  • Love it, thanks tester

  • Are you going to produce anymore?

    apc - type 2 - CLUB 36

  • Are you going to produce anymore?

Probably, but there are still more than enough blanks for another anodising batch once enough people sign up.

  • I have to do some anodising this month, so if you get in quick you can have a Type 2 top cap without having to wait for loads of other people to sign up.

  • Do you do fancy coloured anodising?

  • Can I have a type 2 please?

Ideally I'd like the letters CDF separated at positions 9 12 and 3 respectively, with ^ being taken by the the croix de fer stylised 'X' at 6. Perhaps even 4 middle dots equally spaced between the characters. I lack the artistic ability to draw this though, so I'll settle for an un-engraved one.

Have you any spare torx screws and if so are the countersink angle and depth similar to the previous design?

I always assume everybody on here is either a bike messenger or a graphic designer, so somebody must be able to draw it for you if you're the former :-)

Yes, I have spare screws, they fit all versions of the caps but they have a slightly shorter head height than the aluminium screws issued with the first batch, so the screw is only properly flush with the top of the cap if you have one of the latest caps.

  • Do you do fancy coloured anodising?

Depends on your definition of fancy. Any standard colour from Metro is available for £40 extra regardless of how many caps you want. Don't rely on the colour chart for an actual match, it's purely indicative.

  • @root As you can tell, I'm not a graphic designer

  • When's the deadline for 'art' ?

  • When's the deadline for 'art' ?

Uncertain, the engraver could call me at any minute having done the stuff that's already on the list, it will probably take them a month to do anything new which will then have missed the anodising bath.

  • So have you already been to the engraver? Would like to get a type 3 if possible?

  • Engraving is scheduled for Monday/Tuesday, so anybody wanting a cap in this run needs to get their artwork requirements and payment to me by close of play on Sunday.

  • Sorry, looked thru a bit but could you confirm price for a one inch cap, with engraving and postage please? When is next batch anticipated for? I need to think of an artwork if I go for it, PDF fine?

  • 1" caps with engraving are £22.50 including postage, no need to wait for batch production if you want raw aluminium, artwork should be based on this png image, the black area is the flat part and you'll want to leave a bit of clearance at the edges to avoid running the cutter over the corner. Mark it up in white where you want material removed.

  • Reading your op I realise my carbon steerer should go over the stem. Glad I read that, and will adapt my spacer accordingly... There's a bit I don't understand though, you mention a small spacer provided, you mean inherently integrated to the design of the cap, allowing for the steerer to protrude from top of stem, or as well as the cap?
I assume I'll have to lose the campag screw that says record, it won't sit in the hole as it is. Does the cap cone with it's dedicated screw? Just need to decide if the outer diameter of your cap will not look too beefy on top of the steel stem and figure out an artwork... Will come back to you.

  • /\ /\ I think I replied my own questions there.
Could you please confirm how much of carbon steerer I need to let out the stem to fit your cap design? I'll cut my steel sleeve / spacer accordingly.

  • I think you need at most 3mm, but you can adjust with spacers of course. So for example if you have 5mm above the stem then use a 2mm spacer above your stem and put Tester's stem cap on top of that. On the other hand, you could probably get away with only 2mm above your stem although this is not recommended with carbon steerers I think (see Tester's first post).

  • I think you need at most 3mm

It's a bit less than that, as the cap itself is 3mm internal depth, and you don't want the steerer to be touching the cap once everything is snugged up. Fork manufacturers vary in their recommendation for steerer projection through the stem, although I think the ones who say 5mm are basing that on the scarcity of spacers smaller than 5mm. Any projection at all solves the 'coning' issue, after that there is a diminishing return as the stress peaks at the top of the stem clamp and fall off rapidly as you go up the free steerer.

@veLLo the caps come with a 30mm long M6 Torx countersunk screw which lies flush with the top of the cap when installed, silver caps get silver screws.

  • Thanks for the explanation. Also my cap came in the post today, looks very good, thanks!

  • followed, for the 1" run.

  • @mdcc_tester Do you have any plain 1 1/8" caps anodised? or is it time to start a new list?
