  • Taking things reeeeeeeeal slow though. It's just that I have everything but my reamers and jig... So close.

  • Good luck. I look forward to seeing what you build next!

  • Thank you. That (the build), will be a jig though ;-)

  • what's the cheapest way to ship a complete bike from the USA to the UK? I've found a bike shop that'll box it for me I just need a courier

  • Is there any way of refreshing tired wood paint? Can I cut it? Don't want to repaint.

  • Why does my swatch and many other watches have day of the week and day of the month, surely day and month is more useful?

    Example SUN22 not 22/11

  • Hello all,
I have installed a carbon fork (Columbus minimal), one inch carbon steerer this afternoon.
I didn't cut (yet) the steerer, because it's a big frame and I'll wait to ride the bike before making decisions. If it turns out I don't need to cut, is there a maximum recommended amount of carbon steerer above headset, beyond which it could crack and I end up my face on the ground?

Other question is, because I'm using a steel stem, the carbon campag stem cap looks too wide (because it's meant to align with alloy stem). Can it be sanded down (mounted on a drill, to do a regular job) or will it disintegrate? I used a bit of 1-1/8 steerer as a spacer, which works perfectly and aligns nicely with the stem unlike alloy or carbon spacers, just have to polish it to match.

Final question: this is my first experience with carbon steerer. I bought a special thingy in place of the star nut, but should assembly be made with a special grease (like the one I'd use for carbon seat post?)

  • Handslings - how the hell do they occur without pushing yourself over?

Madison TT at Gent is good watching.

  • Mdcc tester would do you a noice custom steerer cap

  • I handslung a mate of mine about 20 years ago. We got it a bit wrong. Somehow or other he did get past me but he got a wobble on and his front wheel folded in half. So this was the day we (he) discovered that honey was very good for gravel rash.

  • 'Handslung' indeed; you tried the funny masonic version, hence the coincidental discovery of hipster honeycomb on all the things..

  • This is what begged the question. I tried to handsling a mate once, he pretty much stayed put and i went into the verge, over the bars and into a ditch. I haven't given it another go.

  • JB Weld or Araldite to glue up a splined interface to eliminate play?

  • Handslinging clearly looks easier than it actually is. I'm sure practice makes perfect but only attempt it if you have ready access to honey. Health and safety - everyone's responsibility.
#rive_gauche you mention a masonic ritual, it was at the end of ST JOHNS Drive, Dedworth. If that isn't Illuminati and freemasonry right there I don't know what is. Look at Google maps, it's at the centre a triangle of roads. Eerie.

I actually have 1" silver top caps in stock, could be engraved if @veLLo wants to tart things up.

  • do I need DT Swiss 6 bolt adapter for DT Swiss hub or can I use these? http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=74312;menu=1000,2,15,117;page=2

  • Dunno but I might have a few of those kicking around you can play with for nowt.

  • o rly? I'll FB you now

The cap on the picture is actually already one inch, from the campag record headset... But it was design for alloy stems which have thicker walls than the steel stem here. Hence me suggesting sanding it down if that's not likely to destroy it.
Bespoke tart cap is tempting though... What is the outside diameter of your one inch ones? Are they available polished?
(Saying that, if the engraving is deep enough I can polish myself)

  • What is the outside diameter of your one inch ones? Are they available polished?

28.6mm, supplied in 'as-machined' condition, the engraving is about 0.2mm deep so there's scope for end-user polishing if you want shiny.

  • 135 hub in a 126 steel frame, yay or nay?

Was thinking of using DIY headset press in reverse to cold set...

Should I just make life easy and fine a 130 wheel?

Steel stem is 28.2, so the 28.6 should sit nicely (campag cap is 30.8)
I'll look at your thread in classified for the drawing of your cap... I wonder if I could use the campag centre bolt with your one... It says record, quite keen to keep it, not often I treat myself with components...

  • The top caps are nice things, a good idea done well
