  • Brand new from merlin cycles the other month. They were doing a special on a compact chainset with a 11-25 cassette. Couldn't change anything but other than the cassette it was what I wanted (11-28 would have been nice...). They have an offer on at the mo but it's only £10 cheaper than whatever options you want.

I'd go spyres. I haven't used them yet but I've given them a thorough inspection. They seem great, built in barrel adjuster, both pads move so apparently you can just squeeze the lever and then tighten the bolts down and its aligned. I think even I can do that.

How much would a disc frameset set you back with rychtarski?

  • useful stuff thanks. Are you suggesting I avoid discs because Rychtarski doesn't specialise in this and a combination of communication & my lack of knowledge would be an issue?

can you use mini-v's with dropbar levers? I searched this before and thought not.

  • And unless you have a pretty decent budget. Kinesis do a carbon disc fork. Straight allot steerer. With eyelets as well I believe. Around £130.

  • Yes and yes. Personally I'd want an experienced builder for going road disc; Rychtarski is great for simple stuff.

TRP 8.4 with shimano/sram that has arm height of 84mm OR if you want to keep it cheap Tektro RX5. I am running RX6 atm on my commuter with 35c tyre + guard.

  • I think you are doing the man a disservice by calling him inexperienced.

  • I am happy to call myself inexperienced for someone better than me.

The conversations I had with them numerous times didn't inspire confidence to get something that wasn't straightforward.

    (I had a rychtarski BTW)

  • JB has a build that is pretty much what I am after. I think sticking with rim brakes makes the most sense..I can get what I need with them (28mm + mudguards)

  • Very much this.

JB has a cross check to run bigger tyres though so 28c for him is 'skinny'.
You have a 'skinny' tyre bike ..

  • 28c is plenty, don't believe the tractor tyre hype too much.

  • nearly got sucked into the disc + 35mm hype

  • I can definitely see the argument for discs, but people have managed for many years without them.

  • Totally; I am mega impressed by the sub £50 mini V braking atm.
I am going to stay disc-free as long as I can.

  • Here is my talbot with trp v brakes , flow 28 rims 28 mm tyres with whisky forks with mudguard eyes and its a 48 based on a ritchey swiss cross .

  • FWIW I've had spyres on my cx commuter through two Swedish winters and never had to do anything with them except one change of pads. And everyone was on about the stock pads being shit and how I'd need to fuck about with adjusting things before I got them but as I say, no probs. Also, what's this about Rychtarski not being capable of producing a disc frame? @psee seems to be doing all right.

  • I think I would go carbon fork if I went with discs so what are my options here (with mudguards mounts)

    Limited.

  • JB has a build that is pretty much what I am after.

Personally I'd just copy JB's. Keep it simple. You understand how the parts work and what to buy.

I'd just ask the builder to make the clearance as big as he can with what ever brakes you're thinking.

I think Amey's idea of mini v is a good one.

  • Genesis do a carbon fork disc/mudguard eyelets/mid fork rack mounts, 400mm a-c though.

  • yeah this is what I am doing, keep it simple.. also dont want there to be too much clearance when running 25c tyres as I will probably end up riding in the summer too! I have contacted Kuba at Rychtarski to get the ball rolling.

  • colour wise..

  • Cool colour.

also dont want there to be too much clearance when running 25c tyres

I wouldn't restrict or worry about the clearance. The calipers will limit it enough and you have the CAAD10.

I don't know if you noticed the weather, but I suspect you'll be riding it next summer because it has 'guards.

  • I'm running TRP 8.4's on my Kepler and they are bloody brilliant.

  • well, exactly, no point in having space for 35c tyres if they wouldnt clear the brakes I guess!

    Anyway, paid deposit this morn..

    ..this afternoon:

  • That's yours!? Progress!

  • yep, said he could start this week. Started today.. mad!

reckon I can get this built up for less than an off the peg CDF

  • What's geo then? Copy of the CAAD10 with more clearance and braze ons? Tubing?
