  • Great to see this built, looks like a mighty neat job. Looking at the mockup without the chain-stays, and black seatpost / stem, have you considered leaving the forks black, maybe get some vinyl decals cut in the same colour as the frame. Think it might make the frame stand out more, and give more options for painting ?

  • Forks are unpainted and they need at least a clear coat, and I am thinking that it would look more ordinary/cheap with black forks. But I will consider it for sure. Now I just need to get some quotes from the painters. But none of them really seem to be online... So will probably start out by calling them when I arrive in the UK.

Also, I have asked Talbot (coldharbour) to ream my head tube, but he hasn't answered yet. Any suggestions to frame builders around Wood Green who might have a tool for 44mm head tube?

  • ask @CleverMike he's pretty stocked up on tools, hes done reeming for me before so he may well have the tool for that. http://www.clevermike.co.uk/

  • Thank you Spotter. I will give him a call.

Re saddle: Can I find more value for money than this if I want a light and wide saddle in black?

Only other competitor I have found so far is this: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/bontrager/serano-rl-saddle-ec055386

But it is heavier and it is TREK. Much rather have italian leather... Unless somebody tells me this is the better saddle of the two...

  • Sorry hulsroy, don't think I saw the email. Dm me here and I'll get the headtube reamed....

  • Don't apologize. I will write you a new one. ;-)

  • Where can those rims be found for sale? I think they were discussed on the road wheels thread, with the conclusion that they're hard to find.

  • True. Some american stores and strada wheels have custom sets built with them. I haven't found UK store yet. I just find the profile very very sexy ;-)

  • I need 32. Thank you ;-)

  • Agreed. It's a nice-looking rim for sure. I've considered them myself, although I'd (probably) want 24 and 28h.

  • I bet your are skinny :-)

  • That is really cheap. Looks dodgy ;-) I think I'll order some. Thank you

  • If you need 32, I'd suggest the Mavic A rims, matter of fact I may have a set I can sell to you (ambrosio hubs, CX Ray, a719), need to get the 11spd freehub body thought.

That's the front wheel on my bike in the previous pages.

  • That is kind of you. A719 seems a bit heavy at 565 grams compared to the DT R460 at 460 grams.
And I really like the profile of the DTs as well. Looks hot.

I am thinking 5800 hubs, rev or comp spokes and DT R460.

Edit: The extra width of A719 is appealing though. And it seems like the french botique only has one rim in stock, and it becomes more expensive when you choose shipping to UK.

  • The A719 is also very stiff which will reduced the chance of the tyres rubbing against the frame too.

Weight isn't noticable really, decent tyres make the biggest difference, the full wheel build come under 1800g which isn't bad compared to says, Mavic Askium.

  • I will consider it then. 1800g is with Cx Rays and ambrosio hubs yes?

  • The extra width of A719

What's the internal width of the A719? I know the outside is a lot wider but as its a touring rim I'd guess the side walls are quite thick, so I wonder what the difference between the internal width is.

  • I'm also after a pair of 32h DT R460, so if you're getting them sent to London I'd be interested in sharing postage. I'm in no rush.

  • 719mm. The first number is the model, the next two is the internal width, goes for all of mavics touring/disc brake rims.

  • Simba's right.

It would be great to share shipping costs. I think I can wait for the R460s from bike4u. I really like them and I cant see why they should be plenty stiff. I like the Mavics as well, but they are less sexy, weigh more and cost more, and even though I am a fatty I do not intend to stay at 100kgs for long, so I don't believe I will break the DTs ;-)
All depending on what Ed's offer is all about... Arhhh all the decisions.

  • I come from Khamsin and Aksium world. I have only had one nicer road wheelset which was A23, Rev and Hope Pro. I have no real idea what the difference will be. I not afraid of making mistakes choosing to light and fragile, but on the other hand I want stiffness and speed..

  • You're not a fatty...!
