  • If DT straight pull hubs laced to DT rims require 306mm spokes, why do DT only make straight pull spokes up to 300mm?

  • Saw those, although the DT website says up to 300mm for them too, so maybe they really do Comps in longer lengths too and they just haven't updated the website. Don't really want to waste money on aero spokes which are going to be hidden under Raltech covers. It's all a way off anyway, as I need to investigate the possibility of making CentreLock sprockets before worrying too much about other details.

  • I have a ashima centerlock to 6 bolt adapter (...I use for a disc brake) that has a very good fit. (better than the dt swiss version). No slack at all.

Worth checking out together with a velosolo type sprocket?

  • I was looking at the Shimano SM-RTAD05 as a possibility, uses screws rather than pins. Definitely need something compatible with 15mm axle, as that's by far the easiest to convert for fixed rear use.

DT do a straight pull 350 with 6-bolt, so there's not much point using CentreLock + adapter if I go the hand build route, but there are more factory wheel options in CentreLock so an adapter might be needed if I can't (or won't - could be expensive) get splined sprockets.

  • The straight pull hub is for lower rim weight? (nipples at the hub)

  • The straight pull hub is for lower rim weight? (nipples at the hub)

No, the DT ones have the nipples at the rim. Straight pull eliminates the weak point of the spoke, provides a flat face to seat the inner bore of the Raltech cover, and in the case of DT350, the straight pull hubs are a smidge lighter.

  • I've got a pair of v-sprint wheels, 32 hole, 30mm rims, miche hubs. Been using them for commuting and the occasional trip to HHV for the last year two years or so. The rear wheel has started popping spokes recently so I'm looking for a replacement. Ideally I'd like something fixed/fixed that can handle 85kg of me plus my Carradice SQR tour full of stuff for work. Fancy the idea of trying some wider rims as I hear they're all the rage. What would you lot recommend?

  • What would you lot recommend?

Flavour of the month is Kinlin XC279, Novatec A165/166 hubs are flavour of the century. Both available with other branding. H+Son Archetype remains popular, but quite pricey next to the Kinlin.

  • Cheers tester! I think I'd like to stick to the cheaper end of things as they're not gonna be for show. Any idea of a ballpark figure for a build with the kinlins and novatecs? And who to build them?

  • And who to build them?

This is the 'build it yourself thread', so it's your job to build them :-)

Pricing on Novatec hubs varies quite a bit, from £30 if On-One have a clearance to about twice that. The rims are £30 each from Superstar (Pave28) but they only stock 20 and 24H or £40 from DCR, ACI spokes are 21p each. All told, on a good day, you could be looking at just over £100 for the components, up to about £150 if you don't find bargains. Labour ranges from £40 to £80 for a pair of wheels. If you lace them up yourself you can probably save a bit on the building charge even if you pay somebody else to finish them.

  • Thanks again tester! Never tried building my own wheels and have had mixed results just truing them. :) Wouldn't mind trying but I like the idea of getting someone who knows what they're doing to build me a bombproof set for daily use and then maybe starting afresh with my dying v-sprint rear and completely relacing that with new spokes, see if I can get it right...

  • I've built one 36 spoke wheel. It's not so bad if you've a wheel jig and some help which I had. Cycled it for 5 months not a bit out of true. Go for it :)

If the new rims has the same dimension as the old and same lacing all you need is a respoke on new rim, saves £££

  • Anyone know where to buy fixed/fixed novatec a166sb track hubs? Also, anyone bought a pair of novatec hubs from aliexpress? Worth the saving or avoid?

  • Fitzrovia cycles can get novatec stuffs in IIRC.

You can get their stuff from their EU site directly, apparently, but they don't seem to list the hubs you are after.

  • Just waiting on delivery of a Road hub from Aliexpress. Have ordered a fair few things from the site in the last year and never had any issues to report, and mostly flying under the radar of HMRC so no additional taxes which is nice. YMMV obv

  • @branwen Yeah I've ordered a few bits too, with mostly good results. Never hubs though.

Found these ones fixed/fixed but a bit worried about the description:

In the flywheel side of the dead, the other side can be loaded with
    live ammunition

@Howard, cheers for that, may give them a try if no luck with aliexpress.

@JWestland, encouraging words! I have no jig and don't know anyone who could help but if I've got a proper set of wheels to use daily, I reckon I'd be happy to mess about with it a bit knowing I can still get about on real wheels.

How do wheelbuilders generally feel about you bringing the bits to them to build?

  • My first attempt, pretty happy with it if I do say so myself. Watched a heck of a lot of how-to videos but still managed to put half the spokes in the wrong holes, got there in the end!

  • Diy jig too well done :D

  • @TurtleRecall in this case Le Manfriend has the jig not a shop.
Are there cyclist collectives where you live?
Or local cycle groups? Perhaps there's a local hobbyists with a jig in a group?

I'm in Belfast so probably nowhere near you for a jig lend :/

  • Yeah I'm in London so some distance away from you... I'm sure there are people around here but none that I know in real life. I'll have a think, see if I can put a jig together myself.

  • Perhaps there's a Cycling Collective? I'm not a patient person myself, no way I'd try w/o a jig or make one myself but if you are...

  • Seriously considering getting a centrelock SON Delux for PBP with the excuse that I will use it for commuting too. Currently just have Shimano RX31s on the bike but wondering what to get as a front rim, and also looking for someone to build for me. Does anyone have recommendations/suggestions?

  • Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but I am trying to rebuild the rear hub of a brev.m wheel, and wanting to replace the bearings on the one side and may need to replace the axle. I am pretty sure it needs cartridge bearings but there is some wear that suggests it might be loose bearings on one side?! Or maybe that is just because it was being used incorrectly for a while, and has worn improperly. I have had a look at @Vince's tutorial here and I have one bearing, and the axle out, just wondering whether to leave the other bearing, and whether I need to replace the axle and what sort of seals it all in... Any help appreciated (even if only to redirect me to another thread where I can find the answer).
