  • I'm not aware of a Shimano 9sp rear mech with a clutch - I think that came in with 10 speed - but my knowledge of Shimano derailleurs is far from exhaustive so I may be wrong. The only advantage I can think of for using a 9sp MTB mech is that they have a longer cage so you can run a bigger cassette. That's why I used one - I wanted to be able to run an 11-34 cassette with a 30-39-53 triple at the front, and needed the long cage to do so.

  • Have you done any racing in the dry with this setup and if so was shifting or chain-slap an issue at all?

  • [throws mechs and shifters in bin]

    I guess SS is ok...

  • That is Bullet Bros m8... Retro as fuck!

  • They lower the BB on purpose as it's used more as a commuter than CX.

Brakes will shine on the long heavy descent, on a dry normal day it's fine, but when it get really wet, you'll notice a massive difference.

  • I have 6600 shifters I could use for CX. I have the mech too but wonder if a 9sp MTB mech has any advantages? Less chain-suck?

The biggest difference I've notice is the narrow/wide chainring, I have a long cage derailleur on normal cassette (11-28) and never even got any chain slap.

IMHO I don't think it's a problem for road bicycle, even CX, it's more pronounced on MTB to the point they need a clutch.

  • Not sure I'd call it racing, cos it's not, but I used that setup for the Fred Whitton for three years. Shifting was fine, and no problems with chain slap.

  • It's really dry cross courses where there are issues – more so than with riding a MTB (because MTB tyres/suspension soak up more vibes).

  • I don't think your fancy chainring effects chain tension, other than keeping it on the ring.

  • @miro_o Shimano Shadow derailleurs are supposed to be more stable off road, and closer to the frame to avoid hitting trail objects.

  • New frame arrived today, threw some parts on to see how it's gonna look.

Thompson inline in the mail and properly put together next week.

    Can't wait to ride!

  • Oh hai..

    There isn't one.

They released ten speed as shadow - a lower profile, and shadow +, low profile with the clutch. As you say, neither are compatible with road shifters - they use the 'Dyna-Sys' pull ratio, whatever that means.

As you know, only if you need the extra cage to pick up the chain slack. At Howard towers we ran 1x10 with 11-32 on short cage mechs - cage length does not dictate maximum tooth capacity. I think I run an 11-36 on a short cage Zee mech on the jokes long travel bike.

I'm really surprised by how shite the options are for running 1x10 shimano beyond MTBs.

  • I think I run an 11-36 on a short cage Zee mech on the jokes long travel bike.

Seems likely, I have a short cage X7 on my SRAM 1×10 (12-36). It's only 24T total capacity, well within the capability of a short cage. Shimano road RDs can usually be pushed to about 30T maximum sprocket, so you only actually need to contemplate MTB RDs if you're going bigger than that.

OR if you want clutch and high tension.

  • Back on track with its new wheels :

  • OR if you want clutch

At which point we're back to square one with Shimano - they basically don't have parts which can be put together to make a clutched 1×10 drivetrain with drop bar levers.

  • With a short-cage shimano road mech will a 12-25t cassette give me better tension (and less slap) than a 12-30t (assuming each is setup with the correct chain length)?

  • You'd end up with a bit more chain tension in all the gears except bottom with the narrower range cassette. It's not enough to be a consideration though, get the gearing you want first and worry about chain control as a consequence of that.

  • Alright, good stuff. Thanks.

  • You'll need this. Pair only so there's no sense in running 1x10 though...
