  • Ahhhh so so great to see her built up again!! A good decision to sell the beaut onto another forum member who will look after it properly :) how's the ride??

  • cheers for looking anyway,
I asked because i had a very similar frame a few years ago- same paint even!

My frame was Campag dropouts and 27.2 seatpost, but perhaps it was froma similar builder:

  • Goodies!

  • New wheels fitted

  • Any 9 speed MTB rear mech should be fine. An M592 Deore rear mech will work, but it's only an extra tenner for the XT spec M771. I used an M771 with 6700 shifters and it all worked rather nicely.

  • So I finished this recently:

Started out as the 2011 Teammachine with Ultegra 6700 and mavic ksyriums, about 7.5kg, then got hold of 38mm tubs and recently put on 6800 which is a huge upgrade in terms of shifting and the cranks feel stiffer which is a plus. The semi-compact crank is a good compromise for the Crits and the steep lanes in the south-east. Current weight is 7.07kg would be nice to get it to 6.8 without any huge changes, thinking of the Selle Italia SMP chinese carbon number.

  • I think the shadow are 10 speed no?
    I'm running on 1x10 with tiagra shifter / m751 9 speed long cage / tiagra 12-30 / m751 octalink crank.
I think the long cage rd made it easy for the chain to drop.
I may have to change for narrow wide chainring, but not much choice larger than 38 for mountain crank.

Will changing to short / medium cage rd make it better?

  • 6600 is 10sp.

  • Quick mock up from parts that are around to see how it sizes up. Most things will change, crankset and saddle to stay. Haven't really made up my mind on the rest of the parts. Not too bothered keeping it all NJS.
Got a matching black front wheel, which are HF Mack hubs laced to A23's, but not too sure it will work on this frame. Silver front is nicked from my road bike and is going back. Frame has got decent amount of room for tyres, so will get 25c Paselas for front and back.
Needs a 120mm stem, ideally same. Soma bars are ordered at Mosquito Bikes and will be coming with their next delivery from Soma.

    Loads more small details here

  • yup that need silver wheels imo. and some less high risers, other than that it's spot on

  • and pedals. but well fit. ild be more a fan of classic stem too, now the colour of seatpost and stem are too different..

if all goes according to plan i will take delivery of the fork tomorrow and will be able to ride vivian the vivalo on sunday. will report back. well chuffed!:)

  • It will all match eventually, I don't have too many spare parts around at the moment.
Bars on a way are Soma Highway One. Seatpost and stem are likely to be Ti.

I'll use Mack/A23 wheels for now until something nice comes across, Royce or LF Mack in silver would be good.

It does need pedals and chain before it can be ridden. No huge rush though.

  • Looks awesome.

I think the black wheels really make it pop!

  • Thanks.

Will see how it goes. I'm leaning towards silver spokes and hubs, rims could be dark.
May want to use it with a front brake in the future, so might get another set of silver Archetypes.

  • Really enjoying this now it's dialled in.

Brakes aren't quite as spectacular as I expected but great modulation and feel.

105 shifting is a dream after Apex.

    Ride is lovely.

    BB is rather low though...

  • Found the frame in a dumpster, re-aligned the gear hanger and built it up with parts from the bin.
Just awaiting new cantis. Cycling is easy...

  • As is 6700, and while both 6600 and 6700 (and any other 10 speed Shimano road shifters) will work with a 9 speed MTB mech, as the cable pull ratios are the same, neither will work with a 10 speed MTB mech, which has a different pull ratio.

  • That's cool

  • I see, that's pretty good to know.

Is there such thing as a Shimano 9sp mech with a clutch?

I have 6600 shifters I could use for CX. I have the mech too but wonder if a 9sp MTB mech has any advantages? Less chain-suck?

  • They only introduced clutch for 10 speed I think, are 9 and 10 speed not compatible?

  • Really really good job

  • @TM

neither will work with a 10 speed MTB mech, which has a different pull ratio.

    It seems not.

I'll probably see how I get on with the 10sp road mech. I'm not sure if I'll get tons of chain slap if I use a big 11-28 cassette.

  • Fail

    Long cage 105 ftw

  • Long cage + big cassette = lots of chain. This means (I guess) lots of slapper action?
