  • Ended up spending a few minutes last weekend drilling a small hole through each of the mounting tabs at the bottom so I could bolt the stays straight onto there. Looks reasonably tidy, especially when I get round to mounting them on the inside rather than on the outside.

that's rather ingenious! it never occurred to me until now, but those tabs are begging for something to be mounted to them.

  • god those tiagra levers are fugly

  • Yeah I have those SKS plastic bits. I was wondering what was underneath the quick-release part, whether it'd just be a little loop like the rear mudguard has. I tought that would be much lower profile.

Drilling the rack is deffo a good idea though! Would love to see a pic!

    Yes! @pops loves hers.

  • Wrong thread.

  • I love it! I'm very jealous of your upcoming ride. Good luck!!

  • true... but i don't care ;)

  • Gamoh was indeed maximum fiddles. Mudguards are on P-clips as the bolts that come with the rack weren't hugely long either. I may whip them all off later in the week and stick a dab of loctite on, once I've bought some.

Steering doesn't feel too bad, but I cannot wait to eat shit in twisty streets of the Netherlands. Glad I flipped & raised the stem now. Zero Scoblebricks = so comfort.

  • @TM @tyeness
So I finally got round to taking a pic of my bodging. I would have lined them up vertically but the mudguard fitting isn't long enough. There's plenty of space behind to fit it though which I do intend to do eventually.

@TM, I agree with you about the bolts, they're just long enough but nothing more. Don't fancy involving anything between the pieces of metal, least of all squishy plastic!

  • Tidy work @hamrack , @tyeness take note!

  • While I'm at it, have a picture of the rest of my daily bike too.
I've lurked here long enough that I should have posted it by now!

The mess that is the rear mudguard is conveniently hidden by a BBQ's worth of food. There's an Alfine 8 hiding under there somewhere too.

  • Seems a lot of luggage, do you run a market stall?!

  • @tm Hah! Noted!

@hamrack That is really much more elegant. I looked at drilling the rack stays (whatever you call it!), but didn't think it was doable, my mudguard mounts are the big, fat, not even flat kind :(

    Like these:

Also how do you find the Cotic? Considering one in the event that I can't find my first choice of frame in the right size...

  • No, BBQ for ~15 people. The front rack was dedicated to low quality Belgian beer!

@tyeness, you might be able to use an intermediate piece of flat metal? Or a spacer (valve locknuts work a treat) to bring it out just far enough.
The Cotic is nice, very well finished and handles solidly, even when loaded up like that. Could do with a second set of eyelets at the front (they call it a 'life bike' and don't think about that?) or lowrider bosses. Note that the fork dropouts are fully enclosed. Yes it's reassuring, but a pain to fit anything other than a proper thru axle and impossible for a bolt on axle.
If you're a fiend for drop bars then they have a frame designed to take them without needing a mega short stem.

  • Cool, glad to hear that! Yeah I thought the geo looked good for front loading but I'm a bit put off by the lack of eyelets and the thru-axle. Though I think with the Escapade frame is available without forks.

I should see how much a framebuilder would charge to either add some more braze-ons to a fork, or to build a new one...

  • You can take the guards out of that plastic clip (leaving the small metal loop). Its only there to act as a quick release but really its not that needed. I never fit it on my bikes (I used to for customer's bikes though).

  • Hmm thought about that, but I am a massive wet arse and I got scared about facebrake.

  • really need a big mudflap, your feet and drivetrain gonna get real dirty/wet without one.

  • @edscoble Quite true. Gonna go to the LBS to see if they've got a scabby old tyre I can cut up.

  • What is this low quality Belgian beer you speak of? was thinking no beers from Belgium were a poor drink.

  • This, but I guess everything is relative - a bad beer is better than a good glass of coca-cola!
Also, just noted that it's actually French which makes my comment more forgivable....

  • Bad Belgian beer is commonly known as French beer.

    ;-)

  • Thinking of swapping out my Croix de fer stainless frame for something a bit quicker. On the cards so far:
