Whisky / Whiskey / Bourbon

Anybody have a favourite sherry cask or port cask malt that isn't crazy money? Sometimes bourbon feels a bit sweet and I'd like a malt but not something so strong it makes my nuts dry out a la Laphroaig, no, something a bit sweeter.

Balvenie have some good options.

Lagavulin 16 has a lovely sweet finish as standard but still lovely and peaty - the Distillers Editions are finished in sherry casks, they are nice (but £70 ish)

Suntory had a really nice Sherry cask single malt - both yamazaki and Hakushu.

Unfortunately it's really fucking expensive

Bowmore Darkest is bloody lovely and a shade over £50 in most places.

Enjoying this at the moment.. Bit pricey but interesting..

Worth it? hard to say..

pleasantly surprised by a supermarket purchase on a whim - Four Roses Small Batch Kentucky Bourbon - great stuff for £25

Picked up the Lagavulin 12yo 2013 release today. Leaving it until the weekend but it came highly recommended

Reasonable Speyside Single Malt in Aldi at the moment.

I only drink Black Bush which I know disqualifies me from the ranks of aficionados who'll only touch hardcore single malt that tastes of peat bog. But on their days off I've known people of that ilk enjoy Teelings, a relatively new one form Dublin. It's a bit much for me (I can't over-emphasise how woosy I am) but real men (male and female) love it.

Was given a bottle of Speyburn 10... Its not the sort of thing I'd usually go for but its very quaffable. A good session drink.
Its not very complex or offensive but its very well made, which can definitely be appreciated.

Well, I have certainly enjoyed some of their output. Some of which I purchased from the distillery shop...

Try some Speyside. It has a sweeter taste and easier to get into than Highland (or Islay!).

A drop (and just a drop) of water will allow a lot more aroma and taste on your tongue. Have a wee sip, let it stay on the tongue and exhale. You'll pick up the flavours.

Aberlour is a Speyside distillery ;)

I don't rate the Speysides very much, far too sweet and soft for me - although if someone else is buying I think they're lovely
