  • Ended up with the Desire 510, not too bad for a budget phone, my first Smart phone was a desire HD which i thought was a 'big' phone, the desire 510 is huge in camparison!

  • I've just bought a new phone to replace my HTC one as the battery has just about given up. I use google authenticator for a few sites. It looks like I need to disable 2 step on all sites I use it on and then re-enable with my new phone. IS this correct? Seems a bit of a ball ache.

  • Pretty much. Your best bet is to use Authenticator Plus (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mufri.authenticatorplus) or something like that, backs up to local files or Dropbox (p/w protected) and syncs across devices. That's what I did when I set up keepass to generate the TOTP codes for me.

If you select 'can't scan' then it will give you a code - note it down and you can use it to add it to authenticator apps after the fact, like you're wanting to do now. That code is all the QR code actually contains, it's the seed for the time-based code generator.

  • Anybody using Authy?

  • Some sites (Lastpass is one I remember) had the option to authenticate again and just gave you a new QR code to scan.

  • Yep, Xperia Z2. The software is generally shite. When I leave a text conversation using the 'home' button while a message is sending, it will send the message, and then kindly leave it there for me as a draft, so I have to delete it when I go back to that conversation. I've also been returned to the very top of a conversation, in a similar way to you have to the middle.
The 'hotkey' things in the pulldown menu at the top of the screen often just don't work; I've most recently noticed the wifi button and the screen rotation button failing to change anything about what the phone was doing.
Other dumb things; phone doesn't remember settings between restarts. If my wifi is off when I power down, why assume that I want it on when I power down?
My sister has the mini version of my phone and it has a more serious bug; it finds the thumbnails for all her images and puts them in her 'gallery', and then finds the thumbnails of those and puts them in the gallery too. Such a dumb, lazy bug.

There's not much to figure out here apart from the fact that Sony put out shoddy software with their devices. These little annoyances are slooowly pushing me towards cyanogenmod!
@Smallfurry this is something to bear in mind when buying Sony. Overall I like the phone but it can be frustrating at times. I also think that their product lifecycle is shorter than it once was, judging by the phones they're putting out

  • Lollipop Nexus 5.1 factory images out. Its like a new phone in terms of smoothness and battery. Also some nice animations and notification drawer toggle functions.

  • Ooooh. Nice.

BTW any Hudl 2 owners in here? I'm about to pull the trigger on one as a second tablet, as my original nexus 7 is getting decidedly sabre toothed.

Any reason why they are not as good as the reviews say?

  • Redphone + textsecure

    Essential free apps

  • Anyone use a Moto G (3g version) and has updated to Lollipop? My gf's is about to get the upgrade but I have read about it causing drops in battery power so I don't know if it's worth delaying for as long as possible?

  • I wouldnt update to anything other than 5.1, and even then you'll get worse battery I'm guessing. You can ALWAYS do a factory reset to get back to a clean KK phone. You'll lose your photos and contacts and crap so make sure its backed up. You'll also have to update and reinstall the apps through the Play store.

Turning off WiFi scanning, GPS and NFC until you need them saves a lot of battery.

People will always be all over the place with android and battery because 1 - there's no apple koolaid type culture and 2 - there are many different users and phones.

For example my Nexus 5 lasts easily 1.5 or 2 days, while others complain about it dying in 12 hours. But I always install completely clean systems when I update... I never save my app data other than contacts and google drive stuff. I don't run shitty store apps and I freeze any system apps I don't use. And I turn off battery hogging hardware when not in use.

  • You aren't missing anything functional with KK. LP us way more stylish and glossy, but that's all....

  • The phone doesn't get heavy use with WiFi, GPS etc but I'll wait a while before updating. Cheers.

  • No it does because google play services is queried by all your apps for location. If you turn off location it doesn't run.

Another thing to consider is that if you kill 2℅ more battery every hour over 15 hours that adds up to a significantly shorter run time.

Getting good battery is about saving percent every hour while the phone is sleeping.

Turn location on for a day and off. Then look where google play services resides on your battery drain.

  • I have one and mother in law had one. Very easy to use, good screen, battery life and can't fault them for the money, especially with the club card points.

  • Just replaced the speaker/antenna part in my N4 (signal issues) and first impressions are: IT LIVES. Screw buying another phone for now, if I can get another year out of this I'll be chuffed!

  • Woo, good news!

  • Noted. Cheers.

  • Anyone else used cyanagenmod? Looks good.

  • It's decent enough. I like it more than TouchWiz.

  • Damming with faint praise. I'd imagine a broken screen would be better than touchwiz

  • The screen of my Xperia Z3 compact has gone all weird, every now and then it keeps registering touches all over the place. Always seems to happen while I'm trying to text too. Carphone Warehouse should give it a 24 month warranty so I need to return it.

  • Would a technological caveman like myself be able to install the cymagathigamywhattsit?

Does it just simplify up the phone interface/ make it more user friendly?

  • On z3 svreen, one of the reasons i got mine is its waterproof, yet if you get a drop of water on it = screen craziness/ not usable

  • True, but there's no risk of killing it by spilling a drink on it. I also used my old Xperia Z to take photos underwater while on holiday.
