Have fun, set a time, try to beat it next week!
My knee pain is still with me. Went for a run yesterday and it started hurting after 13 mins. I wasn't going particularly hard/fast either :(
Physio now thinks its something to do with the sciatic nerve running through my hip. I'm hoping it's not something like piriformis syndrome and that it can be fixed!

Finding the right pace is tricky. I started off overly cautious on my parkruns (only done 5 so far) and so my times are coming down nicely. Hoping for a 25:30 tomorrow (although I should be aiming for sub 25 as I've gone that fast on a 6k run a few weeks ago) but this will probably be the run where I push to hard too early and blow up[1].

Cheers for the advice. Im going to try and pace out 25minutes then, it seems possible. Im much more used to stop start running so this will be interesting.
@Greenbank, the going to fast thing is my worry here as i don't have experience or know the route, though it looks pretty like a straightforward loop.
I will be doing a bit more running as it takes the place of my other activity until the specialist gives me the go ahead too get back on the bike etc... You never know I might find I like it.

I don't agree at all.
Just run as hard as you can, andyoull soon find the correct pace
I hate pacing, because it makes me slower.
Ps who wants my Garmin Fenix 2 + HRM.... Used a few but not enough times, strap will be washed and battery is all good.
Comes with Usb lead of course...

^I agree, run as fast as you can maintain, then check what that pace is, then try to stick to it.
Biggest thing for me is to not slow down toward the end, so trying to keep a certain figure in the pace field is good for that - stick to 5min/km or whatever your goal is.

^^ & ^ this for the lulz. If you're not puking on the finish line you obv weren't trying hard enough.
Alternatively just relax & enjoy the first one and worry about times or pacing once you've done a few.

I like this approach, but being quite competitive, even if its only against myself, Im not sure would succeed at relaxing.

I'm about to start running after injuring my thumb to the degree that i can't do any other activity, no cycling allowed because I can't hold handlebars as the brace restricts all movement.
Focus on form for the first week. Not speed. Use your core, think about your stride and how you're moving.
Its far less technical than good efficient form while skating, but the concept applies.
Also its only fun when you're good at it. Running sucks when you haven't done it in a while because you lose your form.... So really its about getting a lot in the first week in a comfortable methodical self aware manner and getting your form back.
Any runner whose fallen off the wagon a few times knows this.

That makes a lot of sense, im expecting it to feel completely different from how I run in other sports as the technique and aim will be different.
I will update how I went at some point

@AWu-Tang for a start you won't be carrying a hockey stick.
Get round. enjoy it. Go faster next time. At a Parkrun there will always be someone to run with. Unless you are going sub 16.
@5awyr is that through overtraining and lowered immune system or just a general illness. I have been hammering multi vitamins in an effort to avoid illness in this marathon build up. Apart from one minor cold last week it seems to have work.
@HatBeard that's rubbish. Hope you recover well. Is there another week you can substitute it for in a couple of weeks time?
I'm on for 70 this week. Including two proper sessions. Tuesday did 5 miles at half marathon pace then 2 at marathon pace and last night did laps at Battersea park with a fast group of marathoners (I was dropped off the back going at 5:45 a mile).
Longest run of the build up this Sunday. 22 miles and testing the nutrition and water again.

General illness.
I used to do the vitamins daily but been very lax lately. First time I've been ill in a while so maybe there's something in it.

24:16 - hit my target so I'm pleased, and i definitely had a bit more in the tank at the end. I paced myself carefully so I didn't run out of stamina, and the feeling at the end was pretty good. I finished around half way through which I think is a fair reflection of my ability. I may be able to shave 30 seconds of next week, so thats my next target. I think I'll have to buy some dedicated running shoes if I keep it up.

Race your pace half marathon, good experience, really slick organisation would run again!
The pacers were excellent if I do say so myself

I think I've got a bit of extra pace, but much faster may take a while. It was such a strange feeling to not either completely go for it or slow off but to just keep going.
@Sainsburys_Ed that looks to be well attended.

Yeah if you don't feel utterly wrecked after a 5k there's plenty more in the tank.
5s and 10s might be the worst distances there are for that. For me anyway.

^ I remember after my fastest 10k I slept all afternoon, was proper fooked.

haha, it's pretty special, but he was at least nice and visible from a long way off, when i sent him off on the last lap to try to crack 1:30. always hard to pace people when they pick up the pace in the last few miles, and then fight the temptation to hunt them down!

• #10771
Yeah, pacing others not racing must be weird when they kick on.

Went for a splash on the 1-2-3 muddy trails around a windy Mersey Valley, got carried away and chucked a big loop up the river on the end which was good fun. I faded the last 3 miles but happy with the run. Gory details cos I used spaceships to measure it all:

for sure, just have to remember its supposed to be supported training for later in the year!
Nice to leave my half pb alone for now so i can have a crack at breaking it later in the year...

Llanelli Half Marathon coming up this Sunday, feels like a big moment in my marathon training. I've had a strange couple of months where training has been a bit iffy but I've had pretty good races.
Llanelli is pan flat, weather is looking good, so no excuses. Think I've got to be looking at sub 1hr 26 if I've got any chance of sub 3 in London.
Yeah I reckon 25min would be in reach. Keep it steady and consistent and smash the last km if you know the route.
