Guess it depends on how far you need to travel to reach the start. When I've done rides in the Cotswolds I've stayed overnight with friends who live near the start. With the Wye Wednesday like @hippy I got up at 0430 but unlike him didn't cycle all the way to the start. I got the train part of the way and cycled a bit. Same on the way back. It took me just over an hour to get home. If it's going to take more than 2 hours to get home after the ride then I would consider finding somewhere to stay. Obviously depends on how you feel afterwards.
What's people's strategy for the early morning starts way outside town? Drive? Stay the night before? I don't really want to buy a car just so I can ride my bike more, but rentals aren't so great for ferrying bikes around. Then if you stay the night before, do you stay a second night, or just try to hustle so you've enough time to get back to London after?
Complete noob question I know, but am just trying to figure out logistics...
