The cost?

Meh, belt drive isn't as low maintenance as they claim to be, best to stick to chain.
I do like this.

@dancing james Gears, obvs
Brakes are death too

Have to say I have also read a lot about reliability issues with the Alfine 11, unlike the 8
-
• #56
I'd love a Di2 kit for my Alfine, have found it virtually impossible to find parts/manuals etc so I know what parts I need.
-
• #57
I don't think you can convert the cable pull alfine to di2.

Howard, I disagree with your estimate of maintenance. Chains last longer because the run is simpler and puts a great deal less stress on them. They are also thicker. You also never need to open (old) Sturmey hubs up. The 4 speed dyno hub on my Raleigh has worked perfectly for the last 60 years. A drop or two of oil is all they ever need. It's had the same chain and sprocket since 1974 too, but of course it lives in an oil bath chain case and never gets dirty.
The nicest hub I rode was the modern Sturmey 3 speed on my Raleigh Chopper. All the problems of the AW3 fixed.
Mind you I had one bike with a Nexus 7 and I grew to hate it.
Do Genesis still do the Day One Alfine 11? I lusted after one of those for a while.

I am eyeing a NuVinci 360, anyone tried it out? Reviews seem to be fairly good.
-
• #61
I have the Alfine 8 speed on my every day bike but would never consider the di2. Why pay a
lot of money for what is always going to be a sluggish heavy bike? That genesis for over 2k
is a joke. Like somebody mentioned before the heavy wheel has quite a negative effect.
No point tarting up a tank. -

NuVinci 360
I think that's what @Smallfurry has on his Yuba Mundo?
-

Well my setup is all kinds of wrong.
3spd S3x on a 53x15 chainset. (It works pretty well tho)
Chain needs replacing / cleaning thats about it.
I have noticed that the indexing lets it down a bit. Basically the hub design is a bit flawed bless it, and if you give it out of the saddle beans in anything but direct drive it is liable to pop out of gear. (Shitty selector pin)
(Fortunately I don't really thrash hills)
could be my glutes doe

For those of you who have been spending some time in the Ti bike thread will know I'm thinking of building up a Ti version of the Day One, off the peg options have revealed this
Kocmo, frame would run you 1,500 euros, complete bike 3,000 euros

If you don't wanna touch it, ride in all weathers and probably not even clean it then I'd suggest the rohloff. They are fuckin bullet proof, I've had one for 5 or so years and changed the oil once maybe twice at most. Still runs like the 1st day I got it.
-
• #68
how many off the peg bikes come with a rohloff? They are super pricey!
Not to dampen your enthusiasm for them, but you can buy a whole bike for the cost of one of their cheapest hubs.. -
• #69
You could say the same for a chris king hub.
Part of what you get is the longevity, reliability and the after care.
-
• #70
Cannondale used to do them. In fact, if you watch eBay, picking one up used is one of the cheapest ways into Rohloff-land.
But ya not many OTPs come Rohloff equipped outside of the motherland.
Why not get Talbot Matt to make you something nice?
Howard, I disagree with your estimate of maintenance.
@ⒷⓆ I think you might have missed my point

I don't think you can convert the cable pull alfine to di2.
Ah, I thought it was just a case of pulling the cassette joint ting off and putting the motor unit in it's place.

This is how I got my Rohloff. I bought an ex demo 2008 Badboy Rohloff on eBay in '08, in perfect condition. The frame has long since passed away, the headshok before that even, however the Rohloff is still going strong. I now run it on a long travel hardtail, and have taken it to the Alps on a few occasions. I did Passport du Soleil with it in '12. I don't really track mileage on this bike, however I doubt the hub has under 20'000km on it. It's had I think 4 oil changes in that time, it's now on its 2nd sprocket, 2nd set of cables, and 3rd chain. Totally bomb proof.

There's a nice looking Enigma Columbus Life / rohloff frame in their clearance section atm, £699:

had my plan chat with Charlie today, Surly Ogre ordered and build planned, stripped the rim myself and Rohloff hub bought off good old LFGSS @jagger ready to be built into wheel.
swap over components from current ride on next ride to swanage and theres my ride for next ten years,
heath, hill, road, forest, bikepack, work, play, boom.
the fat bike scene is now washed out across the multinationals by the way, that trend is burning out,
Genesis 2 new rides that I wont name are exactly same geo and build as Salsa and Surly,
its the next big market for the other brands.
Build your own Rohloff and rock something bombproof into eternity
Price?!
