  • and possibly the artists royalty policy... although i'm still undecided on that too.

  • Yeah i suppose... incrementally though, not such a big step from premium. I'll give it a (free) try anyway.

  • I'm only theorising that we'd want access everywhere, lossless, and to fill gaps in our collection prior to us having lossless. That we'd want party playlists without needing to own the files, but if we owned a file it should play that first (if it's higher quality).

Have you seen what ickstream are doing? It's a group of the third party devs from Steambox/LMS... It looks like they've got an interesting idea going as well...

  • Anyone got any bitchin' big old speakers for sellz?

  • i am looking for some bitchin big ole speakers, too

  • thats better, lets get back to coal fired amps and steam powered speakers

  • If you like bitchin big ol speakers, you should check out Brilliant Corners in Dalston (decent mezcal too...)

I think that links to an image - you can see the nice old speakers there

Sound is nice too - effortless.

  • Howdy all, does anyone know if the rega 24v motor upgrade is worth doing? My planar 3 was running slow so I had it serviced, new belt etc last year but unfortunately its slowing down again so I'm thinking it could be the motor giving up.

I'm wondering whether I should persist with the planar 3 or just cut my losses and get something new. Keep hearing good things about the ProJect Debut Carbon, maybe worth a try...

  • Klipsch La Scala at Brilliant Corners, by the looks of it.

  • Looking for a bit of advice please... Looking to pick up a reasonable turntable on a budget. Anyone got any pointers on what to look for etc?

  • Keep the tonearm from the rega. Much better than the one on the project

  • this is easy stuff. I use an ancient mac mini with itunes, a NAS and USB dac attached to my main stereo. Control is by phone or ipad ('remote' app) and have extended it into the kitchen with an airport express. Basically a cheap sonos, but no high rez support or anything fancy.
I still buy cds and rip them,as I find a better selection of music still on hard copy and I just like buying cds and vinyl. If there was a product that could provide additional streaming functionality using my existing kit I'd be very interested.

  • check the circuitry underneath first or maybe a motor upgrade, but check the ballbearing is at the bottom of the plinth and that it is lubed.

  • what budget?

  • I use a Project Debut Carbon for hi-fi duties and can't fault it.

I think they still do the package with the Ortofon Red cart which is ace and there's plenty of upgrades available if you're feeling fancy.

I was on a budget when I bought mine but managed to get a great deal on an ex-demo one.

  • Cost is partly the issue; after the motor upgrade and I'm ready for a new cartridge it'll be upwards of £200 to get the working properly which is almost as much as the Project. But as danb says the rega tonearm does sound great.

Time to track down the Project for a demo I reckon

  • Ideally below the £100 mark. Its a first go into the world of Vinyl, I have a decent Denon amp and a couple of 70s Warfdale rose wood cabinets. Most of my Hi-Fi is a hodge podge of stuff Ive collected up and refurbed.

@Tree_Trunks Ive looked at the project stuff, a mate has a decent set up with a project turntable, but they begin at quite a high price (for me). Ive been looking around to see if i can pick one up second hand though.

  • I'd upgrade the Rega if it were me (providing that the arm is the straight RB300 and not the curved one).

However first I'd check the oil and the bearing. Did you get the white belt or the standard black belt? I've heard of the white belt wearing quicker.

  • Yeah its the RB300. I had a full service with a new black belt fitted last year so oil and bearing should still be ok. I did a bit of reading and it looks like the motor suspension belt could be the culprit.

The motor upgrade is direct mount so would solve that once and for all.

  • Ah yes that sounds likely. The 24v motor is supposed to be better than the one that came with the P3 2000 (which also used the sticky pad), and also works with the TT PSU which serves as a speed switcher as well.

  • I have both arms and when set up correctly I doubt you can hear the difference.

  • Have a look at older models such as the dual cs range and maybe even systemdek. Then look at set up and new needle and belts.

  • Have you looked at the origin and premotec motors?

  • I'm using the OL motor primarily because I got fed up with lifting the platter then moving the belt to change speed. My deck started off as a P3 2000 but the only original parts are the tonearm, lid and bearing sleeve. In hindsight I would have waited for the P3 24.

Agreed about Systemtek decks. I used to own a Thorens TD150 which sounded excellent but they are no longer the bargain they once were.

  • Has anybody been to Spiritland in Shoreditch yet? The set up looks amazing
