  • Very briefly had some fun at the T184 this weekend, which is 184 miles from the Thames Barrier to the source of the Thames out in the Cotswolds. It's a new event, and a really good idea - c.80 started, 14 finished, one of the most challenging races I'm aware of to have been won by a woman. Fully self-supported, all runners must carry 4 days worth of kit and food, which leads to all kinds of conundrums - to pack light and hope to finish fast, or be ready for all eventualities and be prepared for the long haul. The latter urned out to be the sensible option.

Most people seemed to drop due to blisters and/or hypothermia, both of which did for me at c.70 miles - wasn't able to hobble fast enough to keep warm through the night.

  • Doing the Royal Parks half in October, 6 weeks training in and managed a PB of 55ins for 10k tonight!

That seems so slow compared to some of you. I am gunning to do it in under 2hrs although thats going to be a pretty mean task.....

  • where that Hyde, Green, St James circuit?
be good place to race good luck!

  • @Roy-B yup indeedy!

  • @Roy-B Haha, thanks! Wasn't sure about it when my alarm went off but I really enjoyed it and wasn't completely shit at it. Congrats on the 1st place in orienteering!!

  • fairplay to Hats for doing that swim bike run thingymajig , cant remember what its called

I think that's called 'Blade Running'. You heard of it Roy?

  • IN my attempt to get back into running shape after a long lay-off for a potential half marathon in early November, just managed 7.5 miles in 54 mins, which is 7.2mins/mile... Pretty chuffed!

If i can keep that pace but up my distance by about half a mile a week, I reckon November for a half will be fine.

I'm not used to building up to longer running events, is that type of escalation wise / feasible? Will put me on around 11 miles just before the start of November

  • I used to build my long runs by 15 mins per week with a reduced (or just same) week about every 4. Thats about 2 miles.

  • Wow, that's quite a fast build, but i guess the 4th week of stabilisation levels it out.

Running makes me tired. And sweaty. Still hot nearly an hour and a half later.

  • The rule of thumb is 10% increase across both total weekly distance and long run I think.

15 mins worked for me, particularly as when starting out I never new the rules nor measured runs just extended the loop on my long run by appx 15mins each week.

  • Has the Salomon Switch event been mentioned?

Free to enter limited to 70 places, registratuion opens at 19.47 today

"Salomon has organised an event involving 70 runners participating in one run, through one city and each with one pair of brand new trail shoes.
Kicking off at 6pm on 11th September, starting in South West London, Salomon will lead a small group of runners on a secret 8km CityTrail run to discover the unknown in their area.
To equip each runner for this unique off-road experience, if you sign up for the Salomon Switch event you will be able to switch your old running shoes for a brand new pair of Salomon X-Scream CityTrail shoes."

  • @Pifko you insolent fool im a Nexus 6

  • I picked up an Ashmei LS running top from @andy_k (with thanks) from first run in it gotta say I'm looking forward to being super cosy warm on upcoming winter training runs.

  • LS in August? Wait till @KL hears about this!

  • He's currently running in a string bikini, always on the shady side of the path.

  • 'super cosy warm'

What is this world coming to?

  • Would tight calves after a 'long' (8 miles) run, and a recent return to running, be just my body adapting or poor form?

  • Do you fore/mid-foot strike?

  • Hmmm not sure really. Think I'm a bit of a plodder, so most likely mid or rear. Definitely not fore

  • Do you warm down / stretch?

  • No. I'm more in a running form where collapsation and drink is all I can muster

  • get some stretching down you.

    (consider long sleeves also).

  • I wore a long sleeve top on a run this evening, thought my skin might melt off, would not recommend.

Then I had a look on strava and saw that my brother took a half day off work and went for a 32 mile run. I feel so inadequate.
