Which Saddle?

  • Can anyone suggest a long, flat(ish) saddle saddle, similar to an Arione but narrower in the forward area (not quite the nose, further back – if that makes sense)?

    .

The Zoncolan is narrow for the entire front section. Looks a bit curved at the back though.

The Zoncolan is narrow everywhere. It's actually not that long though and it doesn't cut in (at the sides) very far back, if that's the problem. Try an Aspide maybe. It's flat (flatter than it looks in the pictures) and it's cut in quite far back.

I have a barely-used one for sale, let me know if you're interested.

  • 'cut in quite far back'

^ I think this best describes what I'm after.

    PM'ed regarding the Aspide.

  • went for a romin pro, hopefully my derrière likes it.

the 130mm wide borrowed from a friend was close to perfect but the quite sharp edges told the tale of a slighly narrow saddle.

143mm it is. enjoyable for those willing to take care of their prostata.

  • Switched my SLR carbonio for a more padded, cheaper SLS flow I think. Not bad. Can see it sagging quickly but more comfy so sod it.
Adamo sit bone shredder still on TT bike.

  • Regal was absolutely perfect for the sit bones but left me with a bit of numbness if I spent a decent amount of time in the drops. Romin pro has been brilliant so far, about to spend a solid week on it so I guess I'll know conclusively after that

  • I love my Smud saddle so much, I'm tempted to stock up on spares. I find the nose has the pefect Width for riding hard, and the rear perfectly supports my sit bones when cruising on the Hoods. I need to have half decent bib shorts on for it to work. But I did a 21 hour ride on this solid lump of carbon without issue.

At 68g I keep expecting it to implode into a million pieces. I'm no feather weight, and I'm certainly not a smooth cyclist. But after several knocks it still looks like New.

  • Recommend me a saddle please lufguss, so far I've had:
Seller italia slr - big no no, felt too flat and narrow
Selle italia turbo - too round, felt like I was falling off each pedal stroke, better than slr though
Fizik Arione - good for short distances but then starts digging in, being too flat/narrow
Specialized romin 155 - felt good but caused a bit of numbness after a while (30+ miles) could be because of cutout or width?
Prologo kappa - according to prologo it's "semi-round" and 147mm wide, I've got on best with this one but it still doesn't feel quite perfect

So what does everyone reckon? I'm thinking something like a spesh toupe 143?

  • What numbness? Undercarriage? Sitbones?

Worth trying the fizik Aliante versus.

  • specialized riva

  • Thanks. They have a deep cut-in?

Not a sensible option but these (below) are intriguing.
    Hotglossy3kcrabonracerbikechair
Selle SMP ripoffs cheap from china ready to bust you a new one.

  • ^ could be interesting...

  • Undercarriage, aliante looks good actually, one ending on ebay soon so may put a bid on, seems to be a similair shape to the kappa, thanks ed
    Any other worthy mentions?

  • Not really sure what you're after.

Have you played with fore/aft positioning, raising/lowering etc? Giving a half a dozen rides between changes?

  • Mainly different saddles to try, I feel like I'm close with the kappa but not quite perfect with it.
RE fore/aft and raising/lowering, yes, but generally I measure height and "sweet spot" and position it the same so it's as uniform a comparison if that makes sense? then move it slightly as to what I feel. Usually giving about 70+miles at least before changing again, so I'm giving them a fair test

  • You might want to give it longer. Weeks not days apparently.

  • it's personal I know but after trying a lot of saddles it's pretty easy to feel the saddle working or not. i'm not saying that a 70mile ride wouldn't be good but if you do a lets say 5km ride and the saddle is awful then a slight shift of angle won't help.

it's all up to you i know and with experience comes knowledge and understanding.

the problem is mostly whether the saddle is of correct width and whether it disturbs your blood flow in the perineum. some of us like more and some like less padding, but if you loose feel in the leg then the saddle is giving pressure in a place it shouldn't.

go measure your sit bones in a local specialized dealer and take a few test saddles with you. and prepare to spend proper money on your saddle and you'll thank yourself when you're older with no prostate problems due to bad saddle choice.

  • Thanks for the advice, yeah your last paragraph is my reasoning for wanting to get it right sooner rather than later. Will have a search for my local spesh dealer to find out, I have a feeling I'm mid 14x just based on what works and what doesn't.

And miro, thanks for your help too, the ones that have come close, particularly the romin and Arione, I've put a lot of miles in 200+, but they're not quite perfect, got a cheap aliante to try for a bit after the kappa, if that's badly wrong, to specialized I go :)

  • ive got on with the Selle Italia SLR SuperFlow 145mm (wide) which has been a major step up from everything i have had previously. No more numbness and ive upped my riding by 50% as a result..
Any other suggestions for something wide and similar? my slr does hurt the sitbones a little. I can live with it but still on that hunt for perfection.

  • I've always loved the Charge Spoon, far more than any other saddle, even my Arione VS. However the stitching ends up shredding my shorts far to quickly. Just found out about the Scoop, and at £30, it's worth a punt.

  • yeah i have it on my daily bike. good saddle. angle crucial though.

  • Tioga Spyder, i know its pretty ugly, but its also pretty comfy, and it weighs very little.

I didn't care much for the Unicanitor, I think my arse is lacking some padding, at 6'2" and 10 stone, although I found it improved when I perforated it, but it ate my shorts.

  • For me, the spoon only works for a quite upright stance. Not good for any kind of more aggressive position.

  • Brooks v Levi 's collaboration. Can't see the fabric lasting unless treated extremely well.

  • ^I have a Cambium (for sale if anyone is interested PM me) and the fabric is heavily coated. I imagine it'll be the same. It's all a bit yo dawg though.
