Amazon Kindle

My kindle keyboard's screen has packed in and alas it is out of warranty so no free replacment this time! Had rather reverted back to real books of late but have been enjoying reading the goldfinch on the kindle to save lugging it around. Does anyone have an old keyboard kindle around they might like to sellz?

How old is it? Warranties are pointless - you have statutory rights which trump most warranties.

Amazon may replace it in any case - they make their money on the books, rather than the hardware.

I broke mine out of warranty and they offered me a cheap replacement of one of the newer models (possibly a refurb, can't remember).

To be honest they offered me £11 off the most basic current version which didn't seem worth it considering how much I have used it in the last year. Will keep my eyes peeled on eBay etc....

I've given my old Kindle to my betrothed and after she connected her account we noticed that a lot of my books were still available to her.

We suspect that if you organise your books into collections (I do), then whatever process Kindle uses to enforce the DRM isn't applied. A silly programmer error by someone, but more than half of my books are still on there and readable.

Were they ones you'd bought from Amazon or uploaded/emailed yourself?

Doesn't take into account:

• different formats (kindle/paper/hard)
  
• different amazon.com/uk/de purchases (without login in seperately)
  
• non-amazon purchases
  -- physical books
  -- stored in Calibre
  
  

How do people track all of this ? I have ~400 books in Calibre, probably about 200 in Amazon UK, 100 odd in Amazon US and about 600 physical books.

Ideally I'm looking for something site / something to keep it all in sync.

I use the "half way through, doh!" method.

It's manual, but it makes it so simple to answer questions like "What did I read last summer?" or "When did I read x?". And in theory I could use the API to go through and find things started "Start: title by author" where there is no "Finished: title".

I have a lot of Google calendars, I use calendars for things that people don't think about... I have others that store logs of every phone call I've ever made, or films seen at the cinema. It's basically my version of a diary, but filterable, searchable.

I've just signed up to that good reads, as I was thinking I was being a bit limited in what I was reading on the kindle, quite an interesting way of seeing what books I might like...

I use whole day events in Google Calendar, so it's really just a case of opening the calendar, tapping a day (opens an add event thing), picking the right calendar (though I can move things later), and entering "Start" + title of the book in the event name.

I don't do voice commands. I refuse to until it answers to "terminal". Unless I can live in an Iain Banks Culture Series book I don't want to be dealing with this.

The new Kindle Voyage have one of the best feature - the ability to turn pages without lifting your finger like the original.

Don't know why it took them this long to realised this.

If they just introduced virtual page numbers I'd be feeling good about the new Kindle.

Thing is... the Kindle iPad app shows page numbers, and it's so much nicer than "Location of some big number to some other big number".

Don't all the Kindle OSs now show page numbers? I can see page numbers on my 3G after updating.

Oddly enough, I think it varies from books to books.

Going to do a bit of reading on this.

Okay, it look like it actually depend on the books itself, according to an Amazon discussion forum, you'd need to look for this when buying a book highlighted in bold (if you can actually see it);

Page numbers on the iPad, locations on the Kindle. I'm also reading the paperback at the same time, that has page numbers too.

The developer of the Kindle ebooks really need to work with the Kindle apps developer.

I have a feeling that the latest version of Calibre can create virtual page numbers.

Personally I generally go with time till end of chapter. The location is only for moving from one device to another when I can't use auto-sync
