  • Brand new needle bearing threadless headset (not my choice) on brand new frame.

Headset cups installed by LBS, star nut installed by me.

Go to tighten headset with spacers and stem and the seal cap is prevented from sitting flush because the compression ring seems like it's too high. I'm reluctant to put more pressure on the whole assembly but there's about a 0.5mm gap, which is higher at the back for some reason.

Cut down ring or apply more pressure?

  • Hmmm makes sense - my thought was that since neither is bolt cropper resistant in any case, bigger might just have the better deterrent effect for your.. average scrote

  • there's about a 0.5mm gap, which is higher at the back for some reason.

Rotate the split ring to see if you can get the gap even all around. It's supposed to be 0.2-0.3mm

  • Thanks. Rotating the ring 180deg resulted in the same thing. Back is higher than front. I suspect star nut could be wonky and the bolt's putting more pressure on the front of the assembly...?

I did it myself and it went in wonky, meaning I had to straighten it by eye by tapping on certain sides with a hammer and screwdriver.

  • There's plenty holding things in line between the top cap and the headset cover, a slightly wonky star nut shouldn't be a problem.

  • Just hire a tiny PA system for the duration of the installation. Maybe just a pair of active monitors would sort you out depending on the size of the installation and the distances at which you need people to hear it, ie people standing close or far away. Inverse square rule I think for wattages.

Google your local disco shops and go chat to them. Like in bike shops they really like talking about their stuff.

I bought a small system form richer sound just now, more money than what I would have liked to paid but at least it sorted, renting is likely to cost near as much as the show needs to be up for 3 weeks... Suppose now I could rent mine out next year to get some money back... Or sell it or whatever....

Ta, will apply more pressure. Or just fiddle with it until it works or I cry.

  • Hello,
Thread of my stem was fucked up.
    I drilled it.
    Used a threaded rivet.
    Et voila.

My gut feeling is that this should be OK, but still I'd like to know what you think:
Do you think there is enough "meat" where I drilled the stem?
Being a fairly soft metal, should I worry using the threaded rivet?
    Am I going to die?

  • We need to see the other side, but my guess is 108mm ISIS. You are about to find out why the cranks were cheap :-)

    Y U so sinister?

If they're the same as the apparently identical ones I've got they're square taper, and take a 103mm BB for a 42mm chainline.

  • Why does my iphone keep asking me to login to luffguss on chrome even though I tick Rememeber me?

  • Y U so sinister?

Because I bought some cheap ISIS cranks without first checking availability of reasonably priced ISIS BBs. Since it's effectively a dead standard, there are few choices and they aren't the kind of main line item which gets heavily discounted by the big online sellers.

  • Last week someone wished to make a complaint about an officer. He had just pulled apart a bit of a "handbags at dawn" scuffle at a well known Berkshire racecourse. One of the combatants told the officer that he paid his wages. The officer replied "Well if you pay peanuts you get monkies".
This (white) gentleman considered this a racist comment towards his (mixed race) daughter who was nearby but oblivious to the conversation. Racist comment or belm? (for a bit of thread crossover)

  • Not racist but easily misconstrued as such, particularly by someone looking for offence to take.

'Monkey see monkey do' has no racist connotation to it to the best of my knowledge, nor does the image of monkeys throwing darts at a dartboard that economics writers sometimes use to describe chance. Nor the infinite monkeys who would eventually write Shakespeare, in another thought experiment.

  • Evidently not racist, and if anything the monkey in question is the officer so how could it be construed as deliberately intended to offend "gentle"man

  • The only way I can see that as being racist is if the officer made effort to look at the daughter after he had said it.

  • A friends in West London is looking for a proper backpack. What are the best outdoor shops in that area?

  • Racist? It used to be that religion was the last resort of the scoundrel, now it's alleged prejudice.

The expression is in common usage and was a direct response to what Burlington Bertie said, so the context is clear.

Tell the complainant to fuck off. Tell them to fuck off now and to fuck off hard.

Does he or she not have an Oyster card or a bike to get to the cluster of outdoors shops in Covent Garden? I've always been a fan of Cotswolds but I dunno if they have a W. London shop.

Sadly I am not the one dealing but I think that is what is going to happen.

I think we've had the odd post recently about language needing to be taken in context to be understood. The context here is clear and nothing like racist.

Post the complainant's details up and we'll all send him an email advising accordingly.

Thanks! I think he can travel there no problem.

  • Sounds more like the officer complaining about his pay grade....

    Anyone?!

This is ingenuity (or could it be engineeooity?) at its best. help a man out

  • He's police, obviously it's racist.
