Pretty heroic; small child, burning building, you don't stop to think....
or possibly, teaching a child to do an emergency stop in a playground, walking backwards, trip over a basketball stand and go arse over tit.
Time for some pads...

I hope you were wearing more than just your LHBPA t-shirt while you were "teaching" this "child".

Thank you for the kind thoughts, everyone. And Bothsmell.
It was a teaching opportunity, importance of always looking behind you etc etc. I'm still not sure how I fell over backwards and landed on my elbows though.

You don't know your arse from your elbows? :)

Hi all.
I was involved in an accident on New Cross Road, just by New Cross House last Wednesday at around 9:30. Was cycling in the bus lane and a driver from the lane to my right hard turned in front of me. I was right in front of the turning so i swerved left to avoid being hit by the car and in doing so collided with the curb and went head over heels. The driver paused on the turn and then drove off.
Result: a severely broken wrist, a hole in my shin right through to the bone, and a number of cuts and grazes.
A witness ran after the car and brought me a registration which he is pretty sure is the correct one. Reported to the police and statement given, now looking into legal advice. If anyone has anything that could be helpful I would appreciate it greatly.

Have a look at the 'what to do in case of an accident' thread, alwaysanalogue. If you're an LCC member, you can also get half an hour's worth of legal advice. Good luck with getting it resolved.

Just a salutory word of advice to be very careful passing parked cars after my experience yesterday.
Just starting my commute home passing a minicab parked on double yellows and bang door opens just as I am coming into line with the car and I hit the door neck first. How my neck hit the door I do not know I can only assume my instinctive swerve put my body in the wrong position. Gory before and after photo below. Skin split down to neck muscles apparently but very little blood fortunately. Half an inch more and it would have been my jugular according to the medics! I just feel very lucky if a little sore :))
Police and ambulance on scene and carted off to A&E. Need to get the bike checked for damage. Brake caliper arms are somehow slightly twisted but am more concerned about are carbon fork and wheels. Should add I was only doing between 12-15mph according to strava. 48 seconds into the commute!

Opening car doors are involved in 10% of cyclist serious injuries and 7.5% of fatalities according to the draft Cycle Safety Action Plan, none of the 32 actions really address this problem.

Fucking ada.
Looks like they did a nice clean job and you'll have a good scar/story to tell. But do make sure to pursue the relevant person (it's the passenger in this case? law says you have to look before opening door etc) for your injuries and your bike. No need to ride cracked carbon and risk anything worse.

/\ /\ /\ Very good gave me a laugh (which hurt!)
I have seen an accident claims company and they think I should get a reasonable compensation payment which should also include (subject to engineers report and valuation) full replacement value of comparable bike and any damaged kit like phone / garmin shoes and apparel etc. Hopefully I will not lose out financially and there will be at least one taxi driver who will remember to look behind before opening his door.

Had my first for a while today on my way home.
I was riding the BMX down Carlton Vale whilst thinking about chinese food, I looked up and noticed the lights were green so I accelerated to catch them, manage to pick up some decent speed then all of a sudden the cranks and sprocket came loose and I went tumbling forwards over the bars and onto the anti skid surface that's in bus lanes.
I landed with most of my weight on the left side of my body and have lost quite a bit of skin on my knee, leg, hip, forearm, elbow, shoulder and back but the most painful bit so far is the impact, I know I'm gonna bruise up pretty badly.

Glad that I came off ok though, it would have been a lot worse had there been cars close by.

Gored on the door - fffffffffff...
That is probably my biggest fear, having a driver open their door on me. So much potential for carnage. I reckon I'm preety good at second guessing car inhabitants activities, but you never know.
Heal up jonH!

Just ride at door width plus extra from parked cars. Fuck traffic behind and fuck the police

Bloody hell, Indra, look after yourself and have a word with the mechanic who put your bike together (may well have been you for all I know). You need a bombproof bike!
Heal up soon.
