took my front wheel to LBS to have bearings replaced and they have broken the axel and cannot locate a replacement (they're odd C4 american wheels). they're claiming they didn't mistreat the wheel in anyway, the axel just broke under normal tension when trying to put it back in following the bearing replacement
if they can't find something similar to replace the axel with, am I just singularly out of luck? enter LBS w/one working wheel (albeit w/rough bearings) and exit LBS w/no working wheel?

You'll probably find their standard T&Cs exclude responsibility for anything which break in the workshop. Looks like C-4 have shut up shop too, so you're going to have to be creative to get your wheel back up and running.

• #3304
yeah - figured as much. just as well I didn't pay too much for the wheels in the first place
what are my options for creativity? could I salvage what's left by replacing the hub?
-
• #3305
Replacing the hub would probably mean replacing the spokes too. If they are the aluminium rim C-4s, that's a bit pointless. Making an axle to fit the hub would possible, but again pointlessly costly. Realistically, a Shimano R501-C30 will do the job, and they are only £90/pr.

According to this WW thread, C-4 was a bloke called Mark and he was shipping really crappy products that no-one wanted to stock after he started manufacturing in USA rather than rebadging Asia made kit.
Lots of bent axles, bearing failures and warranty issues and he eventually closed the brand

Sound like a new wheelset is a better investment then.

hmmm cool
fully intending on buying a high spec canyon in their post-tdf sale (which come w/ksyrium elites) so might just hold off til then and throw a spare front aksium I have kicking abt in the meantime.

^ Do Canyon still do a TdF sale? Anyone know the details?
-
• #3310
Hoke is looking to sell his ksyrium elites that came with his brand new canyon; PM him
-
• #3311
why is he selling them?
-
• #3312
to get something light and aero i think

• #3313
I ended up buying the PX 45mm carbon clincher after about a little while of going through options...seemed to be a good medium between weight, some aero profile, and reliability.

I'm sure it is a setup issue, but SwissStop Green/EE brakes/Flo30= awful braking.
The ironic thing is that the same brakes, with SwissStop Black Prince and HED Stinger 4= awesome braking.
-
• #3315
I have little knowledge on this subject but more contact = more friction in general right? maybe the new pads might need some time to wear down a bit and increase contact area with the flo's that due to their width might have the brakes near their "width limit"?
-
• #3316
You should probably just sell me the flo30's
-
• #3317
maybe the new rims might need some time to wear down a bit
ftfy
Soft anodising on the Flo rims will disappear soon, then you'll be braking on nice grippy raw aluminium.

Steve @ HED uk told me to use standard Shimano pads with my Stingers... WHich is what I'm doing, and braking is impressive with Ultegra calipers.

What are the forum views on switching from a pair of hed 3c tubs to a hed3 and 3d front rear clincher combination ?
The latter are heavier but arguably faster...

Xav will sort you out on the TT thread, but to me it seems like a minimal gain. Sure, if you're trying to win IM at Kona, but you're not. For CTT rules, a cheap 23mm clincher + RalTech covers is probably the way forward.

Cross post - I'm selling some Campag Hyperon Ultra Twos here for £800

Why these and not their Alpha 340s for road use?
How are those Flo rims ridding Dammit? I still haven't bought any new wheels for the Cannondale as the Wheelsmith Aero rims I was aiming for seem to have gone out of stock indefinitely.
Back on the eBay trawl for cheap Zipps I go.
