Which multi tool would you guys pick ?
Both seem like odd choices that don't initially seem comparable.
What do you want it for?
There's a thread here that might be useful: http://www.lfgss.com/thread5571.html

I've had a rear derailleur rip off and am stuck at the end of old Kent road north side. Anyone have an 8 speed spare near by?
-
• #59605
Can you shorten the chain and bodge it singlespeed?
-
• #59606
I know. Going to convert tandem to fixed after this drama

No chain tool :(:(

^ How are you going to swap the derailleur then?
-
• #59609
Good idea though. Will send missus on the bus home to fetch tools. TaTa

Chain has kmc fancy linklink

Ah, of course.
You probably don't have to have an 8sp mech btw, as the indexing is in the levers - I would think that any 8/9/10 speed derailleur would work well enough to get you home.

Will an 8 speed chain sit in a 10 spd mech?

Why has the football thread disappeared from the internal search engine?

Should do - the cages aren't that tight - but it probably depends on the exact combination of chain and mech. 10sp chain probably wouldn't sit on 8sp jockey wheels though.

^^I can still search in it and search for it if that's what you mean?

All sorted now. Ended up using a donor rear mech and riding it home in top gear.
Was a bloody disaster. A stray plastic bag found its way into the rear mech, snapping it across the main body clean in two, ripped the gear cable, bent my rear pannier and twisted the chain across itself by 90 degrees. I straightened that out with some pliers I borrowed in a local mechanics shop. Bent some spokes too.

Speaking of sheared rear mechs, that happened to me today somehow.
I
havehad an old Sachs Huret 6-speed jobbie and was just going to get a cheap Shimano 6-speed off eBay. Will that be compatible if, as a poster upthread indicated, the indexing is all in the shifters? -
• #59618
Yes the indexing is in the shifters, but beware of the difference between slant and non slant parallelogram styles.

I have just bought these wheels to do up an old Beautiful San Zarno frame I have been wanting to get back on the road for a while:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231220692153?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
It has a 8 speed free wheel on the back wheel at the moment. If I wanted to convert it to a Fixie would I have to replace the whole hub?
Thanks in advance.

^^^ Yeah, it broadly works, but there can be the odd compatibility issue. 6-speed (non-indexed) friction shift, I presume? In which case I'd be surprised if there was an issue.

Cheers. From a brief Google, anything form the 80s onwards is slanted, right?
The bike in question is a late 80s Raleigh Pioneer with indexed grip shifters.

^ not necessarily but I think we need more info before advising what exactly you need to do.
Here ends my useful contribution.

what info do you you need? they are Mavic CPX30 with Campag hubs. There is currently a 8speed freewheel on the back wheel. thats all the info I have :)
No I mean magnesium. One of the symptoms of Magnesium deficiency is twitching. Bananas are relatively magnesium rich.
