You need one of these.

^^It has no mech hanger. Those eyelets are for mudguards.
You could try "direct mount derailleurs".

Tyre depends on the original wheel size and the width of your current rims. However I'd guess that unless that bike was designed for 27 1/4 wheels, i doubt it.

Shimano PD-A530, or Wellgo WPD-M17 if you're after something with a more classical appearance.

Finally got the risers and grips fitted, much better. Still got a few more parts to swap out before I'm properly happy with it though ... I think the first thing to be changed up is the cheap, crappy saddle.

What about the comedy wide bars/teeny brake lever combo?

^ Nothing wrong with the bars! There's a bit of a problem with the tiny brake lever though I have to admit, not that good of a feel with MTB BB7s, going to have to pick up a proper lever to replace it with I think.
