  • New custom tensiometer arrived! £85 and a damn sight better than the Park Tool piece of crap I have been using. Now all I need is an excuse to build some wheels up... :D

Are these available somewhere? I'm guessing it's not a one-off?

  • Whats that ding in the chainstay like?

Deliberate, and done by a frame builder, so the bolts on Omnium cranks don't foul the chainstay. It does look a bit untidy though.

  • He is - they're truly wonderful to ride (the 32s are anyway). Very tempted to try out some of Compass's own tyres too...

Good to hear, out of interest did you go for the standard or light weight version?

I got the 28c for a fast ride, but was a really difficult choice between them or the Compass 32c standard for £75 a set, cause as far as I can see they're Grand Bois Cerf tyres with different logos (and one size up).

Depending how well these work for me, when I have new wheelset built up, I might put 32c's on em instead of Paselas... although as rims are tubeless, I'm still tempted by Hutchinson Secteur 28 tubeless and run with lower pressure.

Ah, the choices, I fear I'm soon to be collecting rather a large collection of tyres! :D

And soon to be selling off two Conti GP 4000s 25c's with less than 200 miles usage.

The guy does make them to order, so you'll have to speak to him.

But think he's currently working on some ultra-precision versions with some incredibly smooth, low friction THK slider bearings which will make sure the only thing the dial is reading is the spoke, and either Kafer/Mahr/Garant dial (all very good, same as mine), or Tesa Digico dial (digital and precise beyond belief), which I'd love to get one of when he's sorted the design.

And to do that, this would help I've just realised - kralyevski@gmail.com

  • Thanks, I was about to pm you. I think I'll send him an email.

  • Cool. His name's Filip.

  • Roymund?

I'm interested - would need measurements though - headtube looks massive!

  • I'm trying to find a 26mm ahead stem so I can build it up. I just called up an LBS and asked and they said
    "Oh, you mean 25.4"
"No, that will be too small, I need 26mm"
"It will be fine, they only come in 25.4mm and 31.8mm. Most bikes now take oversize anyway so that's probably what you need"

    Bye then.

Stem length required? Just found this when looking at that Tange chainset from last page.

  • Nitto shims solve the 25.4-26mm problem, you know.

What length do you need? I've got one of those light weight kcnc stems. I can check the length if you're interested.

  • Soma rush last version :

    Dailynarello :

    With love <3

  • Cheers for the offers but I really wanted to get something today, I already have a couple in London that I could have waited for but I was being really impatient. Dave Hinde sorted me out in the end.

This is how the bike looks, with a rough ghetto parts bin build:

    It clears 25mm tyres, just

It feels alright actually, I have about an inch clearance standing over the top tube, and I don't feel too stretched along the top, even with this layback post.

The seatpost is an interesting issue. At the moment there's a 27mm Campag aero post sitting in a sleeve. The seat tube is clearly much bigger than 27.2mm, probably more like 28.6mm, is that something people have come across with 853 before?

  • A bit of Googling suggests it could take a 29.4mm seat post, as some Indy Fab 853 frames do.

Which is odd. Either way, I'd like to get the proper size seatpost as this shim setup isn't very secure.

  • Fixed my voodoo monstrosity as gears are just not for me. Still needs a lot of things*, but that can wait will student loan comes in

*BB, urgently. bearings so dead it wobbles about 3mm either way despite the cranks being tight
    tyres, probably something 40ish, semi-knobbly
    grips
    shorter stem
    saddle
wheels eventually as these are outrageously shit and i've already buckled them just riding over roots in bushy park

other than that, she's dead good fun. ratio as about right for mild offroad i find so i'll be sticking with it.

  • Gaston... Is that just using that Chrome rattle can paint? Lovely finish. I've always wanted to spray something with that.

    No lo sé...

My SLX TT Bazou FG with MAX forks Nitto Bars,DA...
    Lo necesito Stong V...

  • ^kashimax saddle looks perfectly at home with shamals and ergo stem

    Positively and Truely exceptional Gaston.

Does the back get squeaky riding cobblestone roads?..

    Or this an inside bike

  • That looks awesome Gaston. Why does that frame have bottle cage mounts? Also, more pictures of Dat Ass?

Wow, I did not know that Nitto had started making inverse shims. Or is it possible that you have completely failed to understand the problem?

  • Wow, I did not know that Nitto had started making inverse shims. Or is it possible that you have completely failed to understand the problem?

I am pretty sure it is not the first case because inverse shims don't exist.

    Hope this helps!

    I have a Donohue 853 frame which takes a 29.4mm seatpost.

    Troll.

    Ah cheers, that's really useful!

Can I see yours, is it in the Donohue thread?

There's a link to it in there.

  • Also I just went for a quick spin on drops that are too wide and it still seems that the reach is manageable. Bearing in mind it will be track rather than tarck I think it will do nicely till one comes along in my size
