• And I'm totally trying toothpaste instead of Sudo for my next long ride.

  • basically the same as Assos cream

  • Not the same at all. Toothpaste will exfoliate your taint, leaving it as smooth as a baby's. Plus Menthol Fresh, if you choose the right toothpaste.

  • I've posted this before. But Hippy needs more beer. Its all about toroidal body profiles. Zipp and HED cant both be wrong.

  • Wait... Beer isn't protein ? Fuck.

  • If I was as skinny as Spartacus I'd enjoy a beer too. Wait, what? I'm not? Shit. That means I need... beer!

  • I see hes placed himself behind the bar. In for the duration.

  • ^^^ way less sodium than I thought.

Yeah. You need 5 pints to hit the same Level as milk.

  • cough indoor velodrome cough how much? cough

Would probably add another £150-200 on to the price :/ we are this close to opening up bookings though, I have another day at the track on Friday and it should be a matter of days after that

    Xav

  • Is TSS based solely on power, or is it somehow adjusted for HR?

Specifically, I'm wondering about the effect of altitude. In yesterdays intended interval session I really struggled to hit any of my power targets (my legs felt fine but I couldn't sustain any effort longer than 30-90seconds) - presumably this would lead to a lower than expected TSS. However, my HR was radically higher than at sea level (close to my LTHR during Z2 easy sections) - presumably this would suggest a higher TSS?

If there is power data, it's based on just power data.

If you're at altitude and not fully acclimatised, it's unsurprising that your cardiopulmonary system is struggling to keep up, and your power output is down. Your heart and lungs are getting the same workout as usual, but your legs are getting something different, due to the lower load.

  • I think there are discussions in power forums about adjusting your FTP for altitude but I suspect thats the kind of stuff Tim Kerrison is paid a shitload of cash for knowing.

Michele Ferrari probably has something on his website too :)

  • What altitude are you at?

  • I'm in Flagstaff so c.2,100m according to wikipedia. The highest I'm likely to get is a ride up to the Snowbowl ski resort which I think is about 2,800m.

There is nothing very scientific about it but I'm just fascinated to observe how my body responds to the different environment. Z2 felt completely normal except that my HR was way higher than I'd expect at sea level. Z3 was perhaps a bit more laborious than normal but I still felt like I could have stayed there for ages. If I pushed any harder than that things fell apart rapidly... I was supposed to do a series of 2min efforts in Z6 and I could hit the numbers easily for the first few seconds but by about 30secs I was really struggling. If I dropped the intensity back to Z5 I could keep hold for about 90secs before the same dying. It never hurt but I just felt completely empty and started getting a headache towards the end.

    Fascinating.

  • Woah! That's proper high.

I've always found that once you get over 2000 metres you've got to be very careful with measuring your effort, and it sounds like you're discovering this too.

  • For 2000-2800m you're looking at around 12-18% decline in Vo2 max and sustainable power output (ie anything aerobic). The longer you stay there the less decline, but it's only a few % even after being there for a couple of weeks. Untrained people (ie. really untrained) see much less of a decline in power output at altitude than trained athletes too.

I did a Vo2 max test at ~1600m in a climate chamber some years ago, not much fun and I lost well over 50w for maximal aerobic power (500w -> 450w)

  • There was a guy at Palmer Park on Monday doing aero testing for his dissertation, said he's going to start doing it commercially once he's got some Vectors. Think he said £150ish for 2 hours.

  • "the potential is there for example to specify a certain wattage level and then have the bike automatically shift to maintain that wattage. Such a scenario would be of significant use to time-trialists as well as triathletes who tend to maintain specific effort levels for sustained periods of time"

  • Have we done this one yet?

Doesnt sound like rocket science to tell the unit 'I like 85rpm cadence', and have it shift for you. For the best gir and chainline for a given wattage. Allowing you to adjust target wattage on the fly.

Preferably via something that makes a broom broom noise.
