Back to work now and it seems all very surreal.
Thanks for your support. It took me so much longer than planned, but I am so proud of our little group at the back and so happy I got to the finish.
@hippy thanks for sharing Mike's quote. This race has definitely had a huge impact on me, far greater than I could have ever imagined. I was so nervous about riding it solo but so glad I did.

Hey guys!
Dov mentioned this thread so I thought I'd give you an update.
Had tons of mechanicals early doors which meant I had to spend ages in or trying to find bike shops. Planned to make the time back but the heat, my interesting route planning and having to stop and charge frequently has hindered me.
I am loving it, it's pretty brutal and is totally testing my head, body and route planning! plan to finish but have defo been enjoying a more leisurely race, with a few beers most nights π
Well done hippy you are an animal!!!

Agreed, I'm quite jealous there isn't a session like that for men, but I know if there was it would be rammed and lose its worth.
Dov, do you not think that the opening of Lee Valley will take some of the pressure off HHV? I suspect things will become a bit more 'normal' once that kicks off.
At the moment it seems like its bursting at the seams on a Saturday/Monday.As a separate note, my girlfriend has recently started doing the Mule Bar Girl Sunday sessions, I went to watch on Sunday and I have to say that I was really impressed. Not only do the coaches create a fun, friendly atmosphere but the actual quantity/quality of coaching and instruction the riders receive is fantastic. Every single person in the session left with a smile on their face.
We are working super hard to make sure all girls - no matter their level of riding - are catered for this year, so great to hear good feedback.
Although they are fun sessions we are also trying to be really strict about track etiquette so it becomes automatic. I could not believe that one of the posts I read on the Sat training thread about a guy moving down the track with out looking just because the rider below shouted 'last man'. This scares me!
-
It seems the number of riders in the bunch who are not following simple track etiquette is growing and growing, which in turn is going to lead to more crashes. Surely it is the level of skill in the bunch that needs to be addressed which is tough when all you need to do is spend Β£70 on a BC license and rock up and race. It's not just on the track, the same is happening on the road.
-
Heal up everyone!
Seems like it was similar circumstances to the last big crash, which I am still off the bike from almost 3 months down the line. It seems like these big bunch races with different cats don't work that well as many of the riders don't have the experience to cope with sudden changes in pace, etc, etc. How can you blame the rider when they are never pulled up for bad habits or may not realise they are riding badly?
With such an influx of new riders it may mean that the whole approach to racing needs to change to accommodate this. In the past newbies would only be a small percentage and it would be the regular experienced riders who would make up the majority of the racing field - so if one or two riders were acting like plonkers it was easy to spot and also avoid.
Crashing is part of racing and I accept this, but e are not pros and we all have to go to work or school the next day. It is a hobby we do for fun so it is important to try and make it as safe and enjoyable as possible.

I am broken at the moment, so unfortunately off the bike so could not ride.
I heard there were almost 100 ladies turning up for the official Rapha one which is bloody amazing and something that should be commended. A few years ago this would have been unheard of.
Let's celebrate this and not moan about it. So what if there were guys who were leading it. I know first hand, from running our ladies track sessions, that it is not always possible to have all women running it and we rely on men heavily to put it on.
Surely better having men leading the ride than no ride at all?
As a brand the women's 100 has been a huge success and must of got thousands of women riding round the world - as well as women'c cycling in the more mainstream press. I have thought that Rapha have not done enough for women's cycling in the past but surely this is not seeing women as an after thought but taking a step in the right direction?

Racing and crashes go together - i know this. But is just seemed a ridiculous crash.
i think there is more 'dodgy' riding than there has been previously in the B's. People taking unnecessary risks, surging pace, not looking past wheel in front and not holding their lines is becoming more common. Maybe it is just more obvious due to bigger bunch.
I remember politely asking a guy why he almost took me off the track on a saturday morning training session, when he just switched line without looking, and he just yelled at me :-)
i am all for doing anything we can to reduce risks, its super crappy to crash especially in low key fun races.
-
yeah thats what i thought, the pace suddenly eased and then carnage.
i think there are enough riders to split now, although i know they wouldnt have been able to get 2 x 20k in if they split the group. my issue is that i am not strong enough to sit out of trouble at the front when a's/b's together and when there is such a huge bunch and you are at the back - you risk getting caught up in a crash.
are all the a/b races run together now? i havent been for a few weeks. not much point having two categories if they always race together is there?
i dunno - lots of strong people in there who arent that great at riding in a bunch, but i guess there is only one way of improving and thats to race - we were all there once.
just real shame so many came down.
-
Just back from fracture clinic, where a bumped into VCL Josh having his follow up appointment.
My shoulder is worse than originally thought which is a bummer and i have to have an op next weekend to fix it back together. although still counting my blessings that i didnt come off as bad as the poor VCL guy.
Anyone riding at the front know why the crash happened?
-
-
it was ridiculous, there were people all over track and no where to go.
It is the VCL guy who came off worst, poor thing - wishing him speedy recovery.
Laura has lots of road rash and broken jaw, but ok. Josh from VCL suspected broken wrist and i bust my shoulder.
can't believe so many of us ended up in hospital.
Ambulance guys were amazing!
