Yeah, it seems ToB is out the picture really, which is actually great news! Let's hope when it's on that it really has moved on as we have been told and not like it was in 2010 with local "aspiring model or a drama student"s being paid £50 for being "presentation hostess"'s..
British Cycling and British teams it is then.. in relation to Team Sky a friend mentioned that Rapha would probably listen to us if we were to threaten them with boycott as obviously we're a hard core of their customers...also fi'zi:k might listen..
@plexarice no idea what is next but yes, I think it is best if it's aimed at a Race as a deadline..
-
@Scoot that sounds like an awkward experience!
@miro_o I agree about the petition being too broad...am trying to write up a better campaign over at: (if the link works this time..) :
https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/271832/ -
ok cool, Aviva it is then...
Also, am interested in the comments on the article @cliveo posted above - as they give you Tour de France at least the role of 'podium girl' has other aspects that are important to the running of the race.
So it's not simply ban podium girls and replace them with junior riders... I guess we're petitioning to split this role... there would need to be a host or hostess (who can have any appearance whatever) and would have the job of looking after and organising the young riders who will give the prizes along with all the other jobs the 'podium girl' did... Trouble is here I'm assuming the role is the same in the Tour of Britain as it is in the Tour de France... so there may be some tweaking.. Seen as in this article about the Tour of Britain: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/aug/16/podium-girl-tour-of-britain
the women are being offered £50 for a days work I'm guessing the Tour of Britain role might be pure podium.. -
@Katie-Coo That's not my petition. I didn't start it up, I just signed it last night...
You're right. That's why I'm on here talking about it so I can write something that will be taken seriously..
@The_Seldom_Killer I'm not a Londonist either i'm in Bristol now...

I do genuinely think that to replace the podium girls with female cyclists would be problematic because of the context... if there was no history of women being used as decoration in the sport it might not be a problem... so, yeah, agreeing with The_Seldom_Killer
re. whether it'll effect or boost the coverage of female cycling it may just be a super long term thing... The more women who get into the sport, the more equal the gender balance... you never know... but at the moment - if you are a young girl who likes cycling, you watch the tour de france and you see the girls wearing pretty dresses you don't exactly see any female role models who are cyclists... you see female role models who are models.. so it's a long game thing..

I think it's a good point, obviously there's a need for someone to hand the trophy, prize or jersey to the winner but I think if it were to be a female cyclist she'd be likely scrutinised in the same way as the 'podium girls'... Maybe if we could replace them with female and male cyclists, or young riders from local cycling clubs that'd be a better way... - similar to the young kids - boys and girls - at the beginning of football matches - whatever they're called... ?

Ok. Over here: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/271832/

Hiya,
It's been a while since I've been on here.. I've been chatting over on the Tour De France 2015 thread about this article I read last night about podium girls over at Pretty Damned Fast.com - pls read here:
http://www.prettydamnedfast.com/blog/2015/7/5/nopodiumgirls
and a resulting petition:
https://www.change.org/p/union-cycling-internationale-bann-podium-girls-from-all-cycling-eventsWanted to ask you all about ways you think of approaching this subject and ways of encouraging race organisers to make the experience of watching cycle races more female friendly - with a hope that that in turn will boost female cyclists taking up the sport, and maybe also to boost the coverage of women's races.
I wondered whether the petition above is a little too world-wide to make much of a difference - and whether you had any better ideas. It would be great to get LFGSS behind a campaign. But what campaign? - petitioning British Cycling? Tour of Britain? Team Sky?
-
I just posted this photo as it was one of the only pictures i could find of females on the podium... Maybe Tour of Britain isn't doing the 'podium girl' thing? I don't know because I havn't watched it..
Re. think of the models: of course, it's not nice to lose out on an income stream but.. and we could go into this for days.... wouldn't it be nice if the female pro cyclists had a minimum income like the mens do?...
"it’s written directly into the rules. UCI regulations specifically limit the duration of women’s stage races to 6 days when men’s can run for up to 23; restrict the average length of a stage to 100km in comparison to men’s 140km; cap the length of a one-day race at 140km when men get 280km; and, most gallingly, require a minimum yearly salary for men but not for women."

It's just the way Change.org do it - it makes it seem like a reachable goal and as soon as you reach it they move the goal posts. Basterds.
But seriously.. Not sure if this petition is the right way to go about it... would it be worth setting up a UK Cycling Specific petition? Maybe put pressure of the teams to speak up about it? What do ya'll think? I'd appreciate your feedback.

To my shame, this year is the first year I've watched the tour de france ever. I never really got into it before...- probably because listening to it on the radio wasn't the best starters medium - ...and I obviously really, really enjoyed it, and was totally hooked and feel at a loss without it now... However, I was very surprised (well, not that surprised, it being France and all) to see the podium girls - it's insane! Just read this rather good article... Wanted to draw your attention to it: http://www.prettydamnedfast.com/blog/2015/7/5/nopodiumgirls

Hi everyone, long time no see.. I'm living in Berlin now for two and a half years and I've finally gone through my 2008 wheels.. Been searching and can't find a thread related to decent fixie mechanics in Berlin. Trouble is all the fixie-specific bike shops I've found here are so high end I am not allowed to set foot inside, and they don't really want the business .. and all the normal bike shops I've tried can't help (to be fair i'm in the west so I might well me missing something east... anyone have any experience? I need either a new back wheel or replacement barings and a new rim.. nobody I've found so far could help
