Right. Now that exams are done this has finally gone somewhere. I went over all the paint chips with clear nail varnish, greased threads and such and built everything up. Also managed to get the brakes working without any trouble.
All that's left to do now is route the gear cables and have a crack at indexing. Spending >£10 on cable cutters was definitely a very good move.

First proper clean since the last post. Outdoor bike storage at uni halls allows for basically no maintenance...
Also dont think I mentioned the cog is seized to the rear hub :(. Cog spacers are indeed a bad idea. Thankfully the whole drivetrain is still in pretty good nick (bar the chain, which is getting binned), so I'm hoping new wheels won't be necessary for a while.

@BlesUp thanks man.
Speaking of which - this is the best pic I could get of what I thought was a crack. Pretty much certain I was just being neurotic
-
@hma it isn't solely a hatred of cable cutting or bar wrapping, it was more a matter of cost:
Quill stem + bars + bar tape + headset > headset + adapter
I think once I've dialed the fit in and I'm happy with everything else I'll ditch the adapter and try and source a cockpit that resembles this.
In all likelihood I'll keep the fork. The one on offer isn't threaded which would further postpone cockpit plans.
@MCamb So true. These have very nearly been hurled through a window in rage on too many occasions. Whoever gave them 5 stars needs a slap.

@%~} and @alialias duly noted (subject to pics)
@PhilDAS yeah looking at it now I'm pretty certain your meant to run out all the way through, which is slightly annoying since it means I need to recable the rear brake :(
Will try and post a piccy of the potential crack tomorrow. In other news I've also kindly been offered a threadless carbon fork. Looming overdraft tells me no, but the scales scream yes. 😬

Okay, so it's beginning to look more like a bike. There was a hairline crack around the top of the seatstay which I noticed while I was putting the new seatpost in. Since the paint around that area was already pretty ratty I decided to sand it back a little to check it wasn't anything serious - thankfully, I'm pretty confident it was just a paint crack. I asked to LBS too and they said they couldn't be sure without stripping the whole seat cluster back, but that if it was a crack it would make a hell of a lot of noise before it really packs in.
fingers crossed.
Also, I could use some advice on cable routing. Do I need the cable outer to run all the way through the toptube, or is it okay to just have it going into the entrance/exit ports with exposed inner cable running through the tube? Sheldon/Google gave me nothing on this :(

I very nearly bought one of those 1" threadless carbon ones of ebay, but I realized all the associated costs would mount up. It also seems like a shame to get rid of such a pretty fork....

The wheels aren't anything too interesting, just what I had on my old bike. I'm afraid this project is under pretty significant financial constraints - the student loan only goes so far :(.
I've already ordered a crabon seatpost, inspired by @Flandria's Diamant, and there might be a saddle following.
In an ideal world I would go full matching titanium stuff, which I figure would work well with the wheels too. As things stand I've already got the full cockpit from my old bike ready to go, and going for a quill would mean new bars + new bar tape + ballache of rewrapping bars.
-
Discovered this via the eBay finds thread and I couldn't say no to that fade. The paint is pretty ratty in places but everything else is absolutely fine. I'm gonna take the easy/obvious allblackeverything route with 105 and outfit it with some carbon goodies from china.
It saddens me to say it will have an adapter rather than a proper rad ti quill, but I might see to rectifying that in the future.

Dreaming about it though. A month of straight exams, and not actually being in the same houses as the bike, has thwarted progress. Done by the end of the week for sure... assuming I can get to grip with gear indexing...
