Cheers snotty
Seems a shame that as proper MTB is getting ever weirder in its standards (boost, super boost, etc), the supply of strong, durable and not too expensive parts for the (surely much bigger) urban/utility/a-few-years-out-of-date-but-not-retro market is drying up. At least Deore is still flying the flag

@hippy on the money, this innocuous looking bit is proper sharp.
Will attempt to bill the council for a set of boutique tyres

This sounds like a really difficult situation. Dogs are allowed off-lead loads of places and will often come over and say hi to people. 9 times out of 10 it's well received, and the reverse situation happens tonnes too (humans going over to pet dogs, uninvited). So dog owners are not conditioned to think it's a bad thing. Obviously when your son reacts like that people should recall their dogs. But I'm not surprised that many don't, as dog owners like any other group of people contain plenty of wrong-uns, weirdoes, thoughtless or just distracted people.
I think the legality of the situation is a bit of a red herring. You are not going to find the police taking an interest, and even if they did they're not going to be around to prevent it the next time.
I think grudgingly you are going to have to accept that this is a thing that will happen sometimes, and work on what you can do to make it less shit when it happens. I'm not in any way saying it's your or your son's fault of course - but just that you are not going to be able to change other people's (or dogs') behaviour.
What would you do if your son has a similar reaction to say cats or pigeons or something else coming up to him? Is there any way you could familiarize him with a friend's or family member's dog (small, cute, gentle) in a safe and familiar setting?
For what it's worth tonnes of kids are terrified by dogs (I was as a kid too). It was bad enough to be a serious fear that stopped me enjoying things like going to the park. In hindsight I wish my parents had done something about it (even as simple as just talking to me) but they were not at all tuned into my emotions or needs or inner life, shall we say. I'm not suggesting my experiences were like your kid's tho.
As a dog owner I always try to notice this and keep him away but there are times when I feel pretty bad, even just walking him on a lead on the pavement you see kids cower away sometimes. Not sure how it's possible to avoid this though.

Could be sharp bits of metal on the rack in that?
This is what I need to check next
Just on one side of the front tyre. The cuts are as suggested nearly but not 100% aligned with the stripes of the cords(?) under the rubber. Roughly, but not exactly, same angle and length and starting position for all the cuts. Clustered in three patches around the tyre, rather than evenly spaced, but that could just be chance.

I've just noticed tonnes of rips/slashes on one of my tyres, some concerningly deep. Ive got these tyres front and back and the rips are only on the front tyre and only the non-drive-side of it. They are fairly new and very low mileage.
What the hell is going on... poor manufacturing and it's perishing? Some wanker has tried to slash my tyres? As far as I'm aware I don't lean it up against anything sharp on that side... Very odd
This is a kid carrier bike so I think I'm replacing the tyre straight away, keen for it not to reoccur with the next one...
Edit- I do park it in a bike hangar which has a wheel holder, I park it front wheel in the holder. I guess I'll be checking if that somehow has a sharp edge

Squashes look fabulous
It's just coming up to 6 months since we got our plot. Very little actual produce grown due to the late start, badgers eating sweetcorn, slugs getting the best of the rest, but we did get fabulous tomatoes and rhubarb. Slight setback of my wife breaking her leg recently also.
But I'm feeling pretty good about the 'structural' progress, if that's the right word, and thinking that we should be very well setup for a full growing season next year. Thanks for all the advice on here on the way. Just need to order a tonne or two of compost now and rope some friends into an afternoon of shit shovelling.
Photos show mid-May to end-October progress

Only potential issue with this is it's quite acidic. If it's just your own used grounds I doubt the quantity would matter but if you're getting it by the butt load from a commercial operation you might end up changing the ph of your soil considerably. So, perfect for azaleas, camelias etc if you have them, but terrible for brassicas etc
Hubs, like spokes, really ought to be silver
Purple also acceptable but definitely not black
