Sorethroat; I know what you mean about the tyres. These are old ones, not Schwalbes, and have a ribbed tread. I think the 'cream tyre revival' has kinda spoilt it for folks with vintage bikes running on authentic creamies. Looking at early photos of the time, this was the normal colour for a sporting tyre.
I blame the Guv'nor! Although we do have 5 bikes in our house, on cream tyres now - all old ones.
Ive just varnished the grips, so they are less bright, and im fitting genuine period 'flint catchers', and a pair of little top-tube bags for day rides.
Of course, it's pissing down today! -

The clue with these old 3-speeds and roadsters, is usually in the fork crown and chainwheel. I cant quite make out the 3 emblems. If you can tell me what they are, i should be able to point you in the right direction. The tyres look like 26x1 3/8, or 590, so tyres are dead easy to get. Sturmey archer AW hub?
It looks like 1950s or 60s, inexpensive town bike, similar to Raleigh Wayfarers and the like. Nice little thing for knocking about on and loaning to people. -

back on the road.
In time for the Tweed, for which I was too late!
1900s Path Racer. I bought it 5 years ago from a VCC officer, so there's no doubting it's the real deal, but of course nobody has any idea of the maker. Cycle parts are mostly Chater Lea, and fork is Raleigh.
It's fast and fun, and built to ride, not polish.
Ive just given it a gentle refurb, so it will be making appearances around town very soon!
Tonight I will mostly be varnishing grips and buffing saddle! There's a period flint catcher to go on as well. -

Harry Major, what with all this talk of yummy components for yer crosscheck. Is that a fukkin Halfords Massload rack on there? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! We even chuck those away at the bike recycling scheme, when they come off knackered worn-out subways.
Tubus, please! For the sake of all those who will look at this potentially beautiful machine. Offend not mine eyes with the upthrowings of the big H. -

This is my idea of a modern bike, and no I din't get those saddle sores neither! WNBR 2007 (Yes its me).

This was the path racer before my refurb, with mudguards and old Raleigh bits.

Its the black thing in the stand. Original frame with down-sloped top tube, the bars are 1930s but with wood grips. Should be together in a couple of weeks. -

Hippy, I have about 20 bikes, and they are divided about 50/50 between cotter pins and square-taper. Being in the trade, and therefore immune to marketing shite, i havent gone external or hollowtech. I might go splined by about 2020, cos they will be becoming classic by then.
(Newest bike, 2008 Airnimal, No other bikes post 2000. Oldest bike 1898 Gentlemans Roadster).
Maybe my name should change to Retrogrouch? -
BigBen.
Bromptons and other titchy wheels (I used to have a thing for Moultons and still have a Brommie) have less length of bead to 'give' when you pull on it, and the difference between berad diameter and rim outer diameter is proportionately greater (the depth of the rim wall is a bigger percentage) so you have to pull it over the equivalent, on a big wheel, of a massively deep rim flange.
I know that made f*** all sense, but its bin a long day. -

Speaking of wheel jigs, this Marcel Duchamp tribute also doubles as wheel jig and bogroll holder. It also allows me to build wheels whilst on the bog.

Thats the idea. Im in talks with 4 boroughs at the mo. I emailed them all, and these ones had alrady thought about it, but really didnt have a clue whats involved. It's a full time job, and you cant go at it half-assed. Im offering my services as a consultant to get them off the ground, and will probably start one myself if one of the boroughs agrees some start-up funding. Mechanics and volunteers will then be sought!!!
The rest is a 2-hour conversation, and several pints worth (not too many reds in Skully's case!).
Catch up soon, eh? Should be down in 2 weeks, for a week. Will post, and turn up for the advertised 'beers'. or maybe a polo match.
Sadly i missed registration for Tweed Run. Boo - I have the Edwardian path racer and the tweeds, too.
How much, Mc nebula? I could have swopped you for one of my spare sets of square taper 49ds if only I'd known.
However.. beware! This happened to one of mine. No impact, just internal corrosion.
