Hi All,
Response from the Spray Shot attached. They have offered to replace the damaged tubes and respray for a reduced fee however as it involves replacing pretty much every tube on the frame even with the discount it doesn't work out cost effective.
Any opinions on impurities / issues with Columbus tubing?
-
Great thanks @M_V I funnily enough did get a message via social media from the builder saying he'd seen my e-mails however was on holiday so was going to take a look over the next few days and get back to me. Be interesting to see their response vs the spray shops.
-
Hey @M_V thanks for taking a look. In image 1 I was referring to the small hole in the brazed area either side of the bridge.
-
Cheers all, has been really good to get the mixed opinions of the forum. Have gone back to the spray shop with a list of evidence why they could be at fault so will see what they come back with.
@Ben6899 avoiding mentioning the frame maker and spray shop by name in an open forum as don't think it would be fair on them if I pointed the finger unnecessary.
I've reviewed the frame again to take better images to send back to the sprayshop and one point I did notice is around the welds on the dropouts, chain stay bridge and bottom bracket there are tiny holes around the welds could this also be the product of over blasting as well?
-
Cheers for taking a look @PhilDAS would you say there's a chance those holes were not caused by rust coming through? If not is the only other option been over blasted?
-
So frame arrived late last week and was in a pretty sorry state for itself considering i'd sent what I thought was a good condition frame off for a respray.
The top tube in particular is covering in small holes and on the rest of the rest of the frame mainly around the welds there are small pin holes coming through .
I picked up a cheap endoscopy camera (much to my partners horror) and was pretty shocked with how rusty the top tube and down tube looked considering the seat tube, bb area and head tube area were fairly clean.
In contrast i've never looked inside steel tubing so uncertain whether this is standard wear and tear for a bike of this age / usage.
Assuming in light of the inside of the inside of tubes this was not caused by the spray shop. I've not managed to get any form of the reply from the frame maker which is disappointing, however assume they'll be no way of me getting it repaired under there "warranty" as I can't prove the frames usage, storage condition etc.
If anyone else has any other advice, thoughts etc would be great to hear it.
I've owned quite a few junk steel bikes over the years that have been treated far worse than this and never had any issues so this has been pretty disheartening considering the time, cash that went into the bike.
-
@nick_h no word back from the builder as of yet which is disappointing. Tried e-mails, phone calls and social media messaging.. Annoyingly there still posting plenty on social media.
Not spoken to the sprayshop since as trying to decide best course on action. Current consensus is get it shipped back to me and cut up some of the tubes so I can see if it really is heavily rusted throughout or if it more than likely from over blasting.
Let me know if anyone else has any more sensible ideas?

-
Hey @PhilDAS not that I can remember the only hole from memory is the internal cable routing for the rear derailluer.
-
@PhilDAS the hole is the internal cable routing for the rear derailleur. I can't remember if it was painted or powder coated at the time, however the frame makers website shows painting over powder coated.
-
Hey @M_V had a dig through old e-mails and found this picture of the rear dropouts when the frame was completed.
I can't see a hole etc in the area so would assume it has formed since then either due to an internal rust problem / over blasting.
-
Cheers @clubman @bluehuw and @user149724 when I originally posted on the forum I hadn't even thought there would be in a issue with the spray shop based on their reputation and previous bikes i've had sprayed there.
I wasn't aware of any issues with the frame before I sent it and seat post, bb etc came out fine with no signs of rust on the seat tube.
FWIW i'm going to raise it with the spray shop and gauge their reaction. As the frame has already been blasted it is not covered by the Frame builders warranty so in a way i've got nothing to lose apart from time.
Depending on their response i'll have the frame shipped back and inspect further.
Not sure what the next steps in the process if the tubes turn out to be fine and it is more clearly a spray shop error but will cross that bridge if / when I come to it.
-
Was curious by this @Not/random-user but didn't want to sound like a total idiot.
-
@Sumo will do, not expecting to be able to remedy it but more interested now.
@Dogtemple out of curiosity how did you resolve things with the people that blasted your frame and were you able to prove that it was damaged in blasting?
-
Cheers for the info @PhilDAS out of curiosity as i've had numerous steel frames over the years and this is the first i've had issues with would a consumer be expected to re-apply frame saver to a steel frame or would it be something you'd have done professionally?
@M_V I seemed to remember there were breather holes in the stays but may have been mistaken as I don't have the frame in front of me.
With regards to the paint that is as the spray shop had started work on the frame and then spotted the issues and ceased work on it.
I spotted no issues with the frame when dismantling it and the seatpost / bottom bracket etc came out easily with no noticeable rust.
In searching my original e-mail chain with the frame builder I found their terms and conditions which does mention their warranty doesn't cover rust or if it has gone for a respray.
Guess this means i'll probably have to let this one go which is a bitter pill to swallow but thanks everyone for the advice / input.
-
Good point @hippy the frame is currently still with the sprayshop. I didnt want to pay for return shipping until i'd heard back from the frame builder so id only have to pay one set of shipping.
@Sumo will check on the material used in the shotblaster. The sprayshop that did it are part of well established steel bike brand that also specialise in refurbishment so would like to think suitable material was used. Will double check though.
-
This is why I didn't want to name the frame maker or the spray shop as wouldn't want to unnecessarily point the finger, especially in an open forum.
@hippy frame has been shot blasted by the spray shop working on the frame. It's hard because they are are well known spray shop so would like to assume the error wouldn't be their end but I guess no way to be sure.
@Howard don't happen to remember the refinishers from the previous post, would be interesting if it happened to be the same place.
-
Hey All,
Thanks for your input so far.
@hippy didn't see any rust in the bb shell etc when I disassembled the frame or have an difficulty removing parts etc.
@HousecatHST that's my opinion i've got an ancient Fuji i've commuted on for a lot longer and has been left locked outside in the rain for weeks on end that is seemingly fine.
In terms of the spray shop noticing it they said it was hard to see when it was the raw metal and only when there was the white for contrast was it visible which I kind of get.
@dubtap not really interested in naming until i've had a reply from the frame maker. Currently been chasing them for over a week and not had a reply as of yet.
-
@hippy currently it's been blasted and prepped for a respray with a base coat...That was when the paint shop spotted these holes.
-
Hey @hippy cheers for the quick reply... Should have mentioned the one by the dropout is for drainage (I think) and has always been there it's the those other almost like pin prick ones that are of concern and the ones that look like they're forming in the first image but not yet come through.
Hey @Mo-rider yeap that's actually all that's left from the thread (keep meaning to update...PM sent.
