Got a old dawes mtb project on the go https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/306014/?offset=25#comment13791116
does anyone have any of the following please? Cheap good/ open to anything
- decent square taper mtb crankset, preferably 1x
-some v brakes (converting from cantis)
-wide bars - they're narrower than 25.4 - not sure on the size
-seat suited to a 90s mtb
-mtb derailleur jockey wheels
-7 speed mtb cassette
Thanks :)

So tonight I had a little bit of time so I put the headset back in with the original bearings. Measured the diameter as 37mm and this is on the 'as and when' to do list. Managed to have another look at the bottom bracket - the UN55 68mm spare I had lying around is shorter than the original one. For speed/cheapness and convenience I'll stick with the original for now.
stem/ bars cleaned up. I tried to fit a 25.4mm bar but it was too big - I need to get on google and see what the circumference is. Stem back in
-To do: strip + clean hubs (o.g. wheels will do for now), see what range the 200gs derailleur has
-To buy to get momentum going: good quality square tapered mtb crankset, jockey wheels, chain, pedals, wider bars, levers, v brakes, cables
-Less urgent things to buy: 7 speed cassette (or research and see if I can go to 8/9 on the hub/ with the 200gs mech I have)
-As and when: use parts bin seatpost, bb, headset, longer stem, wheels, decent seat, 26" tyres + tubes -
Hey Tom,
thanks for this! I'm going to bin that BB and hope the newish UN55 I have lying about fits okay. Going to use the original headset bearings for now, as long as it's smooth ish.I'll have to locate a crankset on the 'bay/lfgss for now because there is no cycle jumble near me until one in Sheffield in October.

@MisterMikkel if it isn't broken...
These shimano 200GS chainrings have a very weird & inconvenient plastic coating that I've never seen before. -

Bike apart with virtually no problems, which is a relief. Trying to do this as cost effectively as I can (free bike, would be nice to do under £50) and so I'm only replacing what I really need to and buying used when I can.
To do:
-Clean the bike again - degreasing etc.
-Rust proofing - few bits of spot rust, especially around the BB. Will probably just rub this down and clear lacquer it.
-Service wheel hubs (tyres are fine for now, rims are true)
-Replace chainrings - probably go for 1x narrow wide for cheapness rather than replacing all 3. Thoughts?- Clean bits up like the bottom bracket, headset etc and replace bearings.
To Buy:
-new grips (£5)
-cables (£5-10)
-wider bars (£10)
-clear lacquer (£3)
-headset bearings (£2/3)- canti brake pads (£5)
-7 speed chain, 'bay (£7)
-pedals (£5-10)
-narrow wide chainring, ebay (£15)
-headset bearing. Is this 1 inch threaded? (£2-3) - 7 speed cassette (£15)
As and when:
-mudguards
-gum walls
-better saddle/seatpostMay need some advice as I go please as this is my first mtb project / first geared project and first project with canti brakes. Is there much difference in stopping power if you upgrade the brakes? If anyone has any of the parts mentioned above knocking about spare to sell/donate, please message me!

Hadn't even noticed the seat clamp... I was even adjusting it today to try to move the saddle back a long the rails lol. Cheers, will sort that tomorrow and look at parts @togas

This thread is rad. Found this bike that someone was getting rid off. Made a thread if anyone has any ideas :-) https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/306014/#comment13757543
