  • Yeah I'll be geared

  • I'll be mixed.

  • Fancy a mixed kebab now

  • I'll be fixed

  • A route was just posted on the M25 thread, seems a little less ziggy-zaggy as it stays outside the M25. Haven't had a properly close look at it yet...

  • Cheers @middleofnowhere - the routes aren't too dissimilar. I'm sure no matter which way we go we'll get there eventually, or 'tout s'arrange, mais mal' as @cgg might say. I had already tidied up the off road bits from the original and there are one or two good suggestions from the route you posted which I've updated into ours, but it also it's a lot more casual with what look like huge Essex B roads which give me the heebeejeebees. The only other change I can see is whether to stay East or West of the M25 when we get South of Brentwood. Either weave through Upminster or hit every single Ockenden. Going via Ockenden saves 1 mile!!1!

  • What's amazing is actually how busy I am at work at the moment. For those interested can whip this into a spokecard like it's 2011

  • Wow, that's excellent

  • Yes, top work :')

  • Haha so much excite for this.

  • been a while since I have done a ThTWRNC all nighter. way too long actually.

gonna rectify that on 1 Sept.

will most likely ride fixed but will wait until nearer the time if it seems that offroad sections require wider than my slick 25s

I will bring some Spoons vouchers too fellas

  • I can only vouch for the Dartford > Ramsgate section but that will be fine on 23s. The off road section is only short anyway so even if you did want to walk it it wouldn't be a drama.

  • On your route which section is off road? I've done what I thought was the John Mack approved route to Margate which was all on road. Isn't this the same?

  • the bit just before Reculver is. I did the route (as far as Ramsgate) on 23s a couple of weeks ago and there was no drama

  • After Rainham there's a private road that ends in a farmyard then a short section of bridleway before coming out on a road on the far side. If it's an issue it's easy enough to route round by going into Upchurch.

  • Yep John's route has a stretch on gravel through some woods then a descent on grass before Reculver.

  • I was summoned.

So how far is this? I’ve only managed about 60mile routes since I broke my ankle. I fear this may break me!

  • The route is slightly above 100 miles in total and will be ridden at a 'normal' pace, about 25 kph average excluding breaks (I've no idea of the actual pace; let it be said that we won't be going super slow, but not super fast either). There will be one longer break for the crossing a bit before the midway point and some shorter ones along the way as we need them.

Try the Dunwich Dynamo? As for me I'm still not sure my knee can take it, so that's what I'll use as a gauge, as it's about the same distance. If the thing proves to be infeasible I'll deploy a bivvy for the rest of the night and take a train back in the morning :)

  • You will all make it, you will all be fine, there will be no hurrying and there will be plenty of breaks and rests. So long as your bike is in reasonable nick and you are comfortable on it the rest is just a mental game of keeping the pedals turning.

  • @KT_Bee Matt speaks the truth!

  • Doesn’t he always. I’ll put it in the diary, try and build up my miles and call it a bit nearer the time.

  • This ride is definitely intended to be the Saturday night, rather than the Friday night, right?

  • It is on the Friday to Saturday night. Since the Potters Bar's spoon closing time is half past midnight, the event is shown as starting on Saturday, the 1st of September, 12:30 am.

I should probably amend to have the start on Friday evening to account for the pre-ride hydration and dispel any possible confusion.

edit: actually, such a clarification was never made to start with so thanks for pointing it out, but I created the event with the understanding that I wrote above ^

edit2: with this start time, the end date is wrong; it should be "sometime during Saturday afternoon".

  • Of course, we can also talk about riding during Saturday night; but I thought it would be nice to have this night and the following Sunday to recover.

  • Yeah, I'd also prefer the Friday for that reason I think - and I realised, when I asked the question on last week's ride, that no one seemed sure which night it was anyway! :)
