  • So, another Surrey Hills MTB ride, this time taking in Pitch Hill, Winterfold, and Holmbury Hill (as time allows).
Meeting point is Gomshall train station at around 10am on Saturday 31st of October. Ride will be at social pace, trail choice will take in a wide variety of trails, almost entirely XC-orientated with optional steep shit, jumps, drops, and other sundry entertaining hazards .
Ride will be around six hours with an effort to get back to Gomshall for 4pm.

*Disclaimer: you're responsible for your own well being. I won't take you into trails with unavoidable features such as jumps, drops, chutes, or steep shit without telling you first; but the onus is on you read the trail. Bring a decent working bike, wear a helmet, have water, basic tools and appropriate clothing for the day (windproofs/waterproofs, warm gloves, etc).

  • Nice one @mmccarthy, @LHL. See you there.
Hope you can make it @IR.

  • Suspension recommended?

  • Not necessarily, I think you can get away with a rigid especially if you have a larger wheel size than 26". If on a 26" having at least front suspension will help.

  • I'll be riding fully rigid, myself and another (on t_w's other bike as far as I recall) rode the first Surrey Hills ride fully rigid. Gotta admit I was struggling to use the brakes by the end of the day though!

  • Cool - just built a rigid 29er and looking to get out on some rides - complete MTB noob - this ok for beginners?

  • Ha - yeah my thoughts were toward my wrists, elbows and shoulders! Keen to give it a go though!

  • Almost all the trails we will do will be O.K. for beginners. If we do more sketchy stuff (which will be few and far between) I will warn people, encourage them to take a look at the trail first and give them a choice about doing it or not.

  • Cool, will see you there!

  • How pedally vs descendy are these rides usually?

I found that at Aston hill clipless R death but if there's a fair bit of pedalling I'll make the trade off.

  • I'd always go clipless for Surreh. But then I'd go clipless for everything.

  • Yeah that's what I thought, I was set in going clipless all the time but then had a go in Aston hill and wasn't able to always get my feet out in time.

  • Stick with clipless, you'll soon get the muscle memory to unclip really quickly.

  • I ride clipless. It's different riding to Aston Hill really though we can find some very short steep downhill runs. It's largely XC with some interesting trail features along the way.

  • i think i was the only one on flat pedals last time i went... :/

  • I'll be riding flats, but that's just because I'm forcing myself not to be lazy with clipped-assisted jumps! I was perfectly fine clipped in last time. And my technique is shit!

  • I'll come along, mostly to troll @IR 's ridic bike

  • You'll have to keep up with him to do that.....

  • You've seen my 29er, right? I was planning on delivering the trolling whilst riding up the hills

  • Ah right... I think Indra only rides DH now.
