  • From what I learned from the first incident, for political bets some kind of ID is required, and the bookies should do a check to see if the person placing a bet is on the politically exposed persons list.

  • On Yes Minister, wasn't one of the running jokes that the drivers and other staff always knew more of what was going on than the actual politicians? Probably doesn't take much to extend that to the members of special branch?

Stick a comma in the middle and that's his annual outlay for paternity costs.

  • The tory campaign director, married to the latest betting MP, has taken a 'leave of absence' now.
    #thisisfine

  • What a truly fucked up party they are. Just self serving greed and entitlement

  • Conservative party confirms its director of campaigning has taken
leave of absence The Conservative party has confirmed its director of
campaigning Tony Lee took a leave of absence on Wednesday.

His wife, Laura Saunders, is being looked into by the gambling
watchdog over an alleged bet on the general election date.

A Conservative spokesperson said: “The director of campaigning took a
leave of absence from CCHQ yesterday.”

  • You think any of these pricks live in a neighbourhood with a ladbrokes on the corner?

The first one caught was in Scotland tbf

  • Wonder if Labour aids are putting bets on a win

  • Highest I can find is a 1/50 on a Labour win, so a 2% profit.

If you had a huge pile of spare cash you'd have trouble laying enough to generate any useful return.

  • CCHQ has now deleted this.

  • My word, they're even bigger idiots than I previously thought.

  • Can't help but think anyone involved with the tory campaign esp the Director would be very happy to fuck off right now.

  • The Conservative Party’s director of campaigning Tony Lee is also being looked into by the Gambling Commission over an alleged bet relating to the timing of the general election, the BBC can reveal.

    they both placed bets!
    amazing!!!

  • i'm guessing there aren't any labour candidates being caught for betting on the election because they didn't have any inside info on the general election being called, although to be fair neither did most conservative mp's

  • Its just more Tory sleaze. They just can't help it.

When however will those who indulged in dodgy PPE contracts get prosecuted? The sums involved are eye-watering and many made £10millions if not £100s millions profit.

Excl: Here's what happens if you scrape Betfair data for bets on a July election.

This graph cuts off at the end of 21 May, the day before Sunak announced the election.

There's a flood of bets that day - before Rishi formally told the cabinet and stood in Downing Street.

  • Starmer's best performance by a long way just now.

  • Channel hopping and saw Sunak on what I'm a assuming is another debate, just as he told another lie. This time about their special economic zones which were set up using new Brexit freedoms and attracting billions I'm investment.

He cannot stop lying. Being in the EU did not stop us setting up this zones if we had wanted to and we've seen no sign of billions of investment. We have seen £100m of public money going into the one in the north east however, with the private owners taking £10s millions out in profit instantly.

  • special economic zones

Generally very bad news, a favourite policy tool of corruption, e.g. in planning ('urban development corporations'), or as we are seeing in those 'freeports'. Basically, they don't dare change the law overall, so they punch little holes in it and create areas that are more or less unaccountable and that they hope will be under less scrutiny. There are all sorts of variations on the same theme globally.

Being in the EU did not stop us setting up this zones if we had wanted to

Not quite, but Sunak already had form:

Rishi Sunak, the chief secretary to the UK Treasury, inaccurately claimed on Monday that “the EU is pretty much the only place in the world that doesn’t use free ports”. In reality, the EU’s customs code does allow for free ports or zones and there are 82 of them across the countries that are subject to its regulations.
