i'm starting to look at the s500 as rudely rudimentary... i have used them, they do the job and the lever flare is practical to rest your fingers, but the shape is not something to drool over.
comfy to chilling on the flat, but a bit painful when actually braking downhill for instance.

On the brake lever chat, I had some Tektro levers that I used for years (I'm not sure how, I tried them again recently and they were incredibly uncomfortable) which didn't have springs or anything. I was going to try and do something clever to stop the unused lever flapping about but a temporary solution of shoving a ball of electrical tape in the body became a permanent solution because it worked really well and took 0 expenditure and 0 brain power.

The optimal strat is to run a brake cable through it attached to a bell so you can ring the bell with the lever.

They are really nice.

Currently using redundant R8000 levers on my CRACK10 which are way better than my Srams but also rather lumpy. Road levers tend to kill the joyful HH aesthetics I think you're searching for but with the right bars some more old school levers can turn things around
