Working with fibreglass

Posted on
  • Anyone got any experience of working with fibreglass . We bought a window sill planter in fibreglass that needs the sticky out end pieces removed and wondering if this possible , while retain the overall strength .

  • I have. I've made a fair few pieces from GRP, and patched together the fibreglass bodyshell on my old race car after stuffing it into various immovable bits of track furniture. Got any photos?

  • Also some fabrication experience here, mostly simple layups and sticking components together with gravicol.
@Brommers experience sounds more reliable than mine but happy to throw in my 2p worth as well pending pics ;)

  • Who was the boat builder on here?

If anyone recalls, maybe @ them.

  • We bought the largest size of this . Was not cheap , but was super impressed with the build quality when it turned up. We measured the window sill and thought it would fit, but is c 1cm too long in the width ( longest dimension) , so am being asked if we can trim those end bits anyway. The trims are not just for decoration though , and not seeing an easy way to fix and retain the strength this needs . If you heat this , can you remould a bit .

  • Trim just one end, cut a section off and epoxy the end back on again?

Few bits of aluminium L section to hang it all together.

  • The obvious thing was to buy the next size down, which we did, but it turned up and was much inferior product for basically the same price. Issue is this thing needs to remain strong, so less inclined to do anything too radical to affect the structure - having the shoulders removed from one end and patched should do it..

  • I think you mean @Sam_Doman ?
