Shimano chainset recall 2023

  • I've got a set of inspection-eligible 9000 cranks but have buried my head in the sand hoping the situation progressed as I have a million questions and hoped they would be answered by Shimano binning the inspection part of the recall (in UK).

Has there been any update on this (in UK), or is it still only replace if already broken?

If a crank is inspected and passes, unless Shimano state that means it won't be failing in future, doesn't that mean this is an indefinite recall?
Have they prescribed an inspection interval time/mileage for the "vulnerable" batch numbered cranks after each all clear for now inspection?

What happens if a crank owner owner takes just a 9000 crank in for inspection, with 105 or gasp non-Shimano chainrings, do they still get the FC-09 crank with dura-ace chainrings?

  • Has anyone received a set of replacement cranks yet? I dropped a set that had debonded but that I had kept for some reason at my LBS the first week of the recall.

I last checked in with them at the beginning of Dec but they hadn't had anything back from Shimano yet.

Luckily these are just a spare set but if they had been off a bike, I would have been unable to ride it for 3 months and counting.

  • ≈80% of Shimano’s business is bikes, and ≈35% of that is in Europe, at least double the size of their North America business. If they get slapped with a total recall, their shares will tank, which won’t bode well for them post-covid.

  • I've had my replacement through. Dropped off with bike shop maybe 6-8 weeks ago and got them just before Christmas.

  • Thanks, I'll go and ask them to harrass Shimano then. Maybe mine are taking longer because I had a power crank on one side.

  • I replaced my bro's over Christmas (he's not at all mechanically minded), with the new unaffected Ultegra model.

Shop said they were fine (I agree), but it's done now; they're off the bike and no longer a potential source of worry.

He said he'll put the old ones on eBay with a very honest description - not sure how that pans out legally, if someone is willing to take a punt?

  • Out of interest, anyone else noticed an increase in reports of separation of teeth from the chainring on 105 recently?

  • Ouch. Is that yours?

    Which generation of 105 - 5800? 7000? 7100?

  • which gen? r7100?

    ::edit:: - snap!

  • Neither are mine, thankfully. But got me a bit worried.
Both are new R7000 with less than 70km on them apparently.

  • Not in person, but heard of at least 3 occurrences in the last week or so

  • I got mine back 4 or so weeks after dropping it off at LBS.

I guess it depends how many Shimano UK (Madison) are dealing with at any one time.

My crank had a few gaps along the bond lines. So I guess it's good to replace an 8 year old set of cranks but the replacements don't look nearly as good as DA9000.
There are debates out there on if the crank itself is modified for 11 speed (e.g. chainring tabs) or if the modifications are all in the 11speed outer chainring.

I still can't get my head around this "inspection" based recall. I get that it makes sense from a business perspective, but I wonder what would happen if somone had a failure after an "inspection" pass, and before the next "inspection" and sued. Shimano would surely have no argument...

  • Apparently my replacement has been approved but the (surely most common combination) Ultegra 172.5 52-36 chainset is on 'back order'. Nearly five months now...

  • If they've skimped on 105 the company is fucked

  • My LBS has had my cranks since October. They insist that Madison (the Shimano UK dealer I guess) haven’t been given any replacements yet, or worse might not have even been produced.
Anyone else hearing this? I’m keen to get it sorted and I have some heavy entry level Shimano cranks on my bike currently.

  • Finally got mine back a couple of weeks ago, pretty much exactly five months after I left them with my LBS!

  • And were they a new kind of crank/unbranded, or obviously an existing type like 105/Ultegra?

  • I got an Ultegra chainset named FC-08. Looks like the new 12sp cranks but with chainrings that are labelled as 11sp

  • Thanks. I'm going into my LBS tomorrow, so I will run this by them...

  • What's the latest news on this? Are bike shops doing inspections or opting to warranty the cranks typically? Is there still a huge delay in receiving a replacement?

  • Yes, but it’s getting quicker. Last turn around was about a month. I’ve yet to have one refused.

  • I'm running an affected crankset on my old road bike which has an Ultegra 10s groupset. This works fine with the 11s crankset which needs to be inspected/replaced. But from what I understand Shimano will replace with a 12s crankset if it fails inspection. Will this be compatible with the 10s I'm currently running - assume an 11s chain will work with both?

  • Has anyone heard of cranks being rejected by the recall from Madison?

  • I gave my cranks into my LBS 10 months ago now... I'm losing hope.
