Hope clipless pedals

  • I’ve started a return on my week old time xc 12 pedals due to clicking on the left pedal and play in both.

Anyone’s experience with hope? I like a more free feeling float than shimano and worried about more time pedals (my xpro are fine) and have only heard bad things about crank bros. These are on a commuter bike.

  • I believe @Black_Rainbow_Project used them for a while and wasn't too impressed.

I've been using Look X Track for a couple of months now (also mainly for commuting plus a bit of road/bridleway stuff) and like them so far. Lots of float. I've not had them for long enough to give a long term review though!

  • When I worked as a mechanic the shop sold these and the bearing never lasted too long. Never tried them myself though.

    How does the float feel?

  • I sold my first pair of Hopes because I thought they were causing me knee pain.
I went back to ATACS, but after another two pairs failing after months each, I decided to try Hope again.
I remembered that at the time I tried them first I'd been off the bike for six weeks with a broken collarbone. So I figured there's every chance my knees were suffering from all the rest 😂... They just weren't used to it.

Anyway, this time around I've had no knee issues with the Hope, nothing has broken, bearings have no play, cleats have tonnes of life left.
The quality of the Hopes is head and shoulders above ATACS.
They still don't have that reassuring clunk ATACS have when you clip in, but overall I've been happy enough with them to not waste any more money on ATACS.
One thing I'll say though is that my Hopes were set really loose at first, and the engagement felt really vague. Since tightening the springs they've been much better.
I'm using the trail version btw.

  • Thanks, I’ll give them a shot once I’ve got a refund for my time xc 12. Cheaper as well.

  • The float feels great, really good for my gammy knee. The longevity remains to be seen!

  • Not resistive like shimano?

  • I'm not entirely sure what you mean. As in tricky to clip in and out? Or as in it feels like the float itself is being resisted by the pedals? I have SPDs on my other bike and prefer the X Track, they feel a lot smoother generally. It's probably not a fair comparison though because the SPD are entry level and second hand (the X Track are secondhand as well but in better shape).

Edit: if you're curious I can lend you my pair for a week or two to see how you get on with them!

  • I more mean resistive to the float. Speedplay is 100% free, time isn’t bad, shimano is like you’re fighting against anything other that 0degree.

  • Ah I see! Yeah the float feels nice and smooth. Not sure I've got the vocabulary to describe it any better than that!

  • Don't you need hopes own cleats ?

  • Hopes are great, I’ve got a pair on my enduro bike and my friend who is sponsored by them but really picky loves them too.

  • For Hopes pedals yes, same as you need Times own cleats for Times pedals, and Speedplays own cleats for Speedplays etc
